Chapter 5 - The Wedding Toast

The grand ballroom of the Hale estate was breathtaking, designed to project an illusion of untouchable power and eternal romance. Crystal chandeliers worth more than a suburban home blazed overhead, casting a glittering light across two hundred guests dressed in black-tie formality. Politicians, judges, syndicate bosses from three states, and corporate titans mingled over flutes of vintage champagne and caviar, completely unaware that they were standing in the middle of a loaded powder keg.

At the altar beneath an archway of white roses and orchids, Vanessa Caruso stood in a custom Vera Wang gown that sparkled with thousands of hand-sewn Swarovski crystals. She looked radiant, confident, and utterly serene—a queen about to claim her throne.

Beside her stood Dominic Hale.

He wore a bespoke charcoal tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders to perfection. His expression was calm, almost relaxed, though the senior capos stationed near the exits noticed the rigid set of his jaw and the way his right hand rested casually near his jacket lapel—right where his Sig Sauer was holstered.

In the wings, standing just behind a heavy velvet drape near the service entrance, Hannah watched the scene unfold. She wore her gray maid’s uniform for the very last time, holding a silver tray with a pristine white linen cloth.

Down the center aisle, Julian Caruso smiled a greasy, self-satisfied grin, raising his champagne flute early in anticipation of the toast.

The master of ceremonies tapped his microphone, drawing the room’s attention.

“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests,” the MC boomed over the sound system. “If I could direct your attention to our groom, Mr. Dominic Hale, for the traditional unity toast.”

Applause rippled through the ballroom. Footmen moved swiftly through the crowd, topping off crystal flutes with the special vintage champagne designated specifically for the bridal party and immediate family.

Marcus Vance, standing inconspicuously near the audio-visual booth with a smug look on his face, gave a subtle, imperceptible nod to one of the catering staff.

Dominic stepped forward, taking a tall crystal flute handed to him by a trembling waiter. The amber liquid inside shimmered innocently under the chandelier lights.

Vanessa beamed at him, lifting her own glass with a gloved hand. “To our future, Dominic,” she murmured, her voice carrying just enough for the front row to hear. “May nothing ever stand between us.”

“To our future, Vanessa,” Dominic replied smoothly, his voice echoing across the silent hall. “May you get precisely what you deserve.”

Before Vanessa could process the strange cadence of his words, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with a deafening bang.

The music cut off instantly. Two hundred heads whipped around in unison.

Striding down the center aisle, flanked by six armed tactical officers in full combat gear, was Miller. But it wasn't Miller’s presence that made the blood freeze in Vanessa’s veins—it was the two figures walking directly behind him.

Bound, gagged, and shoved forward in zip-ties were Julian Caruso and Marcus Vance, looking battered, terrified, and utterly defeated.

A collective gasp swept through the crowd. Politicians scrambled backward against the velvet-draped walls; syndicate bosses reached instinctively for hidden hardware, only to find themselves covered by the laser sights of a dozen hidden Hale snipers perched in the gallery above.

Vanessa’s face lost every trace of color, turning the stark white of her wedding veil. She dropped her champagne flute. It shattered against the marble floor, the amber liquid pooling like blood at her feet.

“Dominic...” Vanessa choked out, her voice trembling with rising panic. “What—what is the meaning of this? Why are my brother and your security chief—?”

Dominic didn't answer her. He calmly set his untouched glass of champagne down on a nearby silver pedestal table, turned around, and walked slowly down the steps of the altar.

He stopped directly in front of Vanessa, looking down at her with a gaze so terrifyingly cold that she physically recoiled.

“You forgot rule number one of doing business in Chicago, Vanessa,” Dominic said softly, his voice cutting through the silent ballroom like a razor. “Never trust a maid who knows how to keep her mouth shut. Because while you were busy planning a murder, she was busy saving an empire.”

From the shadows near the service entrance, Hannah stepped out from behind the velvet drape. She walked slowly down the side aisle, no longer keeping her gaze fixed on the floor. Her head was held high, her shoulders back, her storm-gray eyes shining with absolute, unyielding power.

She walked right up to Dominic’s side. Dominic reached out, wrapping his warm hand securely around hers, intertwining their fingers in front of two hundred paralyzed witnesses.

Vanessa looked from Hannah’s gray uniform to Dominic’s face, finally realizing the horrific, insurmountable scale of her miscalculation.

“Take them out of my sight,” Dominic commanded quietly, turning his back on his would-be bride. “And throw the whole family out of my city before midnight.”

As federal and syndicate enforcers swarmed the ballroom to haul the conspirators away, Dominic looked down at the woman standing beside him.

The ghosts of the past were gone. The war was won. And the Wolf had finally found his home.
