Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Circle

The sun had fully set by the time the reception dinner concluded under the massive white tent overlooking the lake. String quartet music drifted softly through the warm summer air, mingling with the gentle lap of the water against the estate's stone seawall.
Helena stood near the edge of the stone terrace, holding a glass of champagne, watching the way the light danced across the surface of the lake.
Gabriel walked up behind her, sliding a heavy, warm wool shawl over her bare shoulders to protect her from the evening breeze coming off the water. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Callahan," he murmured against her ear.
Helena leaned back into his embrace, taking a small sip of her champagne. "I was just thinking about the mall. That Tuesday afternoon. If I had turned left instead of right... if I had gone to a different coffee stand..."
"You would have crossed paths with someone else," Gabriel interrupted softly, his arms tightening around her. "And I would have bought whatever company, whatever building, whatever life they operated in, just to make sure you ended up in my orbit."
Helena turned around within his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck. She looked up into those familiar, steady grey eyes—eyes that had terrified half of Chicago, yet looked at her with nothing but absolute, unconditional adoration.
"You're a very possessive man, Mr. Callahan," she teased softly.
"Extremely," Gabriel agreed without a trace of irony. "And don't you forget it."
He lowered his head, capturing her lips in a deep, slow kiss that tasted of champagne, summer nights, and a future that belonged entirely to them.
Far away from the estate, in a dingy, cockroach-infested motel room somewhere in northern Wisconsin, a broken, desperate man sat watching a small, flickering television screen, entirely unaware that his name had been permanently expunged from the ledgers of the living.

Here, inside the fortress of marble and shadow by the lake, the past was dead and buried beneath concrete and wildflowers.
And Helena Collins—broken once, rebuilt by fire, and claimed by an empire—was finally, completely home.
