Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The next two weeks passed like a dream from which Chloe was terrified to wake up.

Her new apartment on the forty-fifth floor of the Russo tower was larger than her entire previous building in Pilsen. It featured floor-to-ceiling windows, a private balcony overlooking the lake, a walk-in closet filled with high-end wool coats, soft silk blouses, and sensible leather boots provided by Dominic’s personal tailors.

Her bank account no longer read $38.12.

On her first Friday, a wire transfer signed by Gideon Vance deposited twenty-five thousand dollars—her signing bonus and first month’s advance. Her landlord in Pilsen had received a certified letter from the Russo Legal Group informing him that the building had been purchased by Russo Commercial Capital, and that Miss Hayes’s lease was terminated with full refund of her deposit plus a five-thousand-dollar inconvenience fee.

Every morning at nine o'clock, Chloe walked down to the penthouse garden on the top floor.

Arthur would be waiting for her at a wrought-iron table beneath a glass conservatory, wearing his cardigan, sipping tea with honey.

They spent hours together. Chloe read him chapters from old Dickens novels—his favorite—and listened patiently as he told her stories about his youth working on the Chicago docks in the 1960s. Sometimes he called her Eleanor, his late wife, and Chloe didn't correct him. She simply held his hand, listened to his memories, and brought him back gently when the fog drifted over his mind.

Dr. Evans reported that Arthur’s blood pressure had stabilized, his sleep had improved dramatically, and his episodes of anxious wandering had dropped to zero.

And every evening at six o'clock, Dominic returned.

The relationship between Chloe and the most feared man in Chicago grew in quiet, magnetic increments.

He was no longer just her employer. He was a constant, formidable presence in her life. He sat with her during dinner, listening with genuine interest as she talked about Arthur’s day, or about the art history books she was reading in her spare time.

He learned that she liked black coffee with two sugars, that she was terrified of lightning storms, and that her mother had taught her how to paint watercolors before she passed away.

In turn, Chloe learned the subtle truths behind the dark legend of Dominic Russo.

She saw the quiet weight he carried on his broad shoulders. She saw how he managed thousands of employees across shipping lines, real estate, and construction firms—and how he dealt ruthlessly with anyone who tried to harm the innocent people under his protection.

He was a protector. A man born in a violent world who used his power to create an impenetrable fortress around the people he loved.

One rainy Thursday afternoon, Dominic walked into the conservatory carrying a large wooden easel, a canvas, and a set of professional oil paints.

Chloe looked up from her book, her eyes wide. “Dominic? What is all this?”

Dominic set the easel up near the glass wall overlooking the stormy river.

“Arthur told me you used to paint with your mother,” Dominic said, stepping back and wiping his hands on a dark cloth. “You haven't painted in five years because you couldn't afford supplies.”

Chloe stared at the rich tubes of paint—cadmium red, cobalt blue, burnt umber—and the crisp linen canvas waiting on the wood frame. Her throat felt tight.

“Dominic... this must have cost hundreds of dollars,” she whispered.

“It cost nothing,” Dominic said softly, walking over to stand behind her chair. He leaned down, his warm breath fanning against her neck, sending a shiver straight down her spine. “Paint the river, Chloe. Paint whatever you want. This home is yours.”

She turned her head, her face inches from his.

For a heartbeat, the room was charged with a sudden, electrifying stillness. Dominic’s eyes dropped to her lips, his jaw clenching with a hunger he had carefully suppressed for weeks.

Chloe’s heart slammed against her ribs. She didn't move away. She wanted him to lean closer. She wanted to feel those powerful arms around her again.

Before Dominic could speak, the heavy glass doors of the conservatory burst open.

Marco stepped inside, his dark face tight with urgency. “Boss. We have a situation at the South Side container yard.”

Dominic stood up straight instantly, the warmth in his posture vanishing, replaced by the lethal stone mask of the syndicate don.

“What happened?” Dominic asked, his voice low and dangerous.

“A fire,” Marco reported grimly. “Two of our warehouses on Pier 14 were torched twenty minutes ago. The arson team found Vance’s mark sprayed on the retaining wall.”

Dominic’s gray eyes flared with a dark, terrifying violence. “Julian Vance.”

“Yes, boss,” Marco nodded. “And there’s more. One of Vance’s lieutenants was picked up by our perimeter team near this building an hour ago. He was taking photos of Miss Hayes when she left the building with your father yesterday.”

Chloe gasped, standing up from her chair, her hand flying to her throat. “Photos of me?”

Dominic turned to her. In one smooth motion, he closed the distance between them, taking her shoulders in his broad hands.

“Listen to me,” Dominic commanded, his voice dark and steady. “Julian Vance is a dog who scavenges around the edges of my territory. He thinks he can use you to draw me out.”

“Dominic... I don't understand,” Chloe stammered, her voice trembling. “Why would he care about me?”

“Because he knows I care about you,” Dominic said plainly, declaring the truth that had hung unspoken between them for weeks.

The confession hung in the warm air of the conservatory, powerful and absolute.

Dominic cupped her cheek with his hand, his thumb stroking her warm skin. “He thinks you are my weakness, Chloe. He thinks because you were a host in a restaurant three weeks ago, you are an easy target.”

His eyes went black as midnight.

“He is going to learn that coming after you is the last mistake he will ever make.”

Dominic turned back to Marco.

“Lock down the building,” Dominic ordered. “Double the guard on Arthur’s floor. Nobody enters or leaves without my personal clearance. Thomas stays with Chloe twenty-four hours a day.”

“What about you, boss?” Marco asked.

May you like

Dominic pulled a heavy gold ring bearing the Russo family crest onto his finger.

“I am going to have a conversation with Julian Vance’s inner circle,” Dominic murmured. “And by midnight, Vance will realize he has declared a war he cannot survive.”
