Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Bennett

By Monday morning, Richard Bennett was sitting in his corner office on the thirty-fifth floor of the Prudential Plaza, sipping a double espresso and reviewing the quarterly portfolio projections. Life, from his perspective, was entirely under control. His firm was closing in on a major municipal acquisition, his social standing was pristine, and his young wife was safely locked away in their Lake Shore Drive condo, nursing her injuries and learning, once and for all, not to reach for her phone without permission.

His intercom buzzed sharply.

Richard pressed the speaker button, annoyance flashing across his handsome, manicured face. “I told you, Veronica, I am not to be disturbed until the eleven o’clock board meeting.”

“Mr. Bennett,” his executive assistant’s voice trembled slightly through the speaker. “You have a visitor in the lobby. Or rather... several visitors. And they’re refusing to wait for an appointment.”

Before Richard could answer, the heavy double oak doors of his private office burst open.

Two men in immaculate federal-style suits walked in uninvited. Behind them stood Marcus, hands clasped behind his back, looking like an executioner at a royal court.

Richard slammed his coffee cup down, the dark liquid sloshing across his glass desk. “What the hell is the meaning of this?! Who let you past security?! Veronica, call building security immediately!”

The lead man in the federal suit—a senior auditor named Miller—stepped forward and tossed a thick sheaf of legal documents onto the center of Richard’s desk.

“Mr. Richard Bennett, you are hereby served with an emergency federal and state injunction,” Miller announced in a flat, monotone voice. “By order of the Illinois Banking Commission and federal investigators, all personal and corporate assets associated with Bennett & Sterling Wealth Management have been frozen effective immediately.”

Richard stared at the papers, his face draining of color. “Frozen? Are you out of your mind? My firm manages over two hundred million dollars in assets! This is a clerical error! Call my lawyers—call District Attorney Vance—!”

“District Attorney Vance recused himself from your matters twenty minutes ago,” Marcus said quietly, stepping further into the room. His voice cut through Richard’s rising panic like a knife. “Along with three of your primary municipal board members. It turns out, Richard, that when people look closely at how you acquired your commercial real estate portfolio back in 2018, things start to look remarkably like wire fraud and extortion.”

“That’s a lie!” Richard roared, surging to his feet, his chair crashing backward against the wood-paneled wall. “I am a respected member of the financial community! You can’t just walk in here and—!”

“We didn't just walk in,” Marcus interrupted, stepping close enough that Richard could smell the sharp mint on his breath. “We dismantled you. Your accounts in the Cayman Islands? Empty. Your commercial properties on Michigan Avenue? Seized under eminent domain discrepancies. Your personal checking accounts, your luxury vehicles, your country club memberships? All locked, frozen, or revoked by noon today.”

Richard grabbed the edge of the desk, his knuckles turning chalk-white. His breath came in ragged, shallow gasps as the monumental reality began to settle in. His wealth, his power, his status—the impenetrable armor he used to shield his arrogance—was dissolving into thin air right before his eyes.

“Who... who is doing this?” Richard whispered, his voice trembling with sudden, unadulterated terror. “Who has this kind of power in Chicago?”

Marcus leaned in close, his eyes cold and devoid of pity.

“A man who doesn't like it when people hurt things that aren’t theirs.”

Before Richard could formulate another word, Marcus nodded to the auditors. They stepped forward, slapped a pair of heavy zip-ties around Richard’s wrists behind his back, and hauled him toward the private elevator. The great and untouchable Richard Bennett was being dragged out of his own skyscraper in broad daylight, stripped of every single dollar he had used to terrorize his wife.
