Chapter 5 - The Gift of Grace Hollow

Three months later.
The autumn air in Riverview was crisp and cool, painting the trees in brilliant shades of crimson, gold, and amber.
The legal nightmare was officially over. Evan Mercer had pleaded guilty to multiple counts of wire fraud and grand larceny, sentenced to twelve years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for eight years. Every single dollar of Robert Bennett's life savings had been recovered and restored to his bank account, along with interest paid directly from the Mercer liquidations.
Victoria Mercer’s lavish estate had been auctioned off to pay for her son’s legal fees and restitutions, leaving her living in a modest apartment on the outskirts of town—a fitting punishment for a woman who had spent her life judging others by their wealth.
Claire had taken a month off from Riverview Medical Center to reset her life. During those three months, Daniel Whitmore had changed too.
He hadn't returned to his nomadic life on the streets, nor had he fully immersed himself back into the cutthroat corporate world of Whitmore Global. Instead, he bought an old, historic stone estate three miles outside of town—a place surrounded by towering oaks and quiet rolling hills.
He had hired Robert Bennett’s construction firm as the head contractor to restore the estate. For ninety days, Robert and his crew worked side by side with Daniel, who refused to sit in an office, choosing instead to swing hammers, carry timber, and lay bricks alongside the men.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Claire drove up the winding driveway of the Whitmore Estate.
She found Daniel standing on the newly built timber porch overlooking the valley. He wore a simple flannel shirt, worn jeans, and work boots, his hands covered in wood dust. He looked healthier, stronger, and happier than he ever had.
"Nurse Bennett," Daniel said, stepping down from the porch with a warm smile. "You're late for your inspection."
Claire laughed, stepping into his arms. Over the last three months, their connection had deepened into something profound, built not on money or grand gestures, but on mutual respect, quiet conversations, and shared healing.
"My dad tells me you worked twelve hours yesterday laying the stone fireplace," Claire said, running her hand gently over his arm. "You know you own the company, right? You don't have to do the heavy lifting."
"I like the heavy lifting," Daniel replied, leading her up the stairs. "It reminds me that good things take time and effort to build. Come inside. I have something to show you."
He led her through the grand double doors into the soaring foyer. The house smelled of fresh pine, polished oak, and oil paint. But instead of filling the house with expensive artwork or ostentatious luxury, Daniel had done something entirely different.
He walked her into the east wing of the estate, opening a pair of glass French doors that led into a stunning, sunlit pavilion filled with medical equipment, comfortable recliners, soft blankets, and wall-to-wall windows overlooking a beautiful garden.
Claire froze, staring at the room in utter astonishment. "Daniel... what is this?"
Daniel stood behind her, placing his hands gently on her shoulders. "This is the Sarah & Claire Foundation for Palliative Care," he said softly. "A private, fully funded hospice facility where low-income families can bring their loved ones to spend their final days in luxury, dignity, and peace—completely free of charge."
Claire turned around, her eyes wide, tears spilling over her lashes. "Daniel..."
"You told me once that nobody should have to die alone or in pain just because they can't afford a private room," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "I spent five years running away from my wealth because I didn't know what it was for. Now I know. I want you to run it, Claire. I want you to be the Director."

Claire buried her face in his chest, sobbing tears of pure, overwhelming joy. Daniel wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly against his heart.
"You gave me back my soul, Claire," Daniel whispered into her hair. "Let me give you the world."
