Chapter 4 - THE DESPERATE RETALIATION

By three o'clock that afternoon, the news of the boardroom coup at San Gabriel Hospital had sent shockwaves through Mexico City’s corporate and medical elite. News cameras and press vans surrounded the hospital entrance, eager to catch a glimpse of the nurse who had overnight unseated her treacherous husband and claimed an empire.
Inside the hospital, Daniela had already moved into her father’s former executive office. Her blue suit jacket was hung on the back of the chair, her sleeves rolled up, as she worked alongside Tomás and independent auditors to stabilize hospital operations.
"Supply lines for the ICU have been fully restored," Dr. Ramos reported, stepping into the office with a warm cup of coffee for Daniela. "Don Julián’s condition has stabilized, and he wanted me to pass along his deepest gratitude to 'Miss Daniela.'"
Daniela smiled, her eyes softening. "Tell Don Julián I’ll be down to check his vitals myself before the end of the day. A title doesn't change my duty as a nurse, Dr. Ramos."
"You are your father's true daughter," Ramos said warmly. "But be careful, Daniela. Mauricio is like a wounded animal right now. He has lost his prestige, his wealth, and his mistress’s respect in a single afternoon. He will strike where it hurts you most."
Ramos’s warning proved prophetic within less than an hour.
Daniela’s phone rang sharply. It was the family home's nanny, Rosa, her voice trembling with hysteria over the line.
"Señora Daniela! Please come quickly!" Rosa cried. "Señor Mauricio and Doña Elvira just arrived with two private security guards! They are packing Little Renata’s bags and taking her away!"
Daniela stood up so fast her chair knocked against the wall. "What?! Rosa, put Mauricio on the phone!"
"He won't talk to you, Señora! He said he has emergency custody papers and that you will never see Renata again!"
The line went dead.
Daniela’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. The hospital, the money, the prestige—none of it mattered compared to her seven-year-old daughter.
"Tomás!" Daniela shouted, rushing out of the office. "Mauricio has taken Renata!"
Within ten minutes, Daniela, Tomás, and two federal officers were speeding toward the Serrano family residence in the residential district of Polanco.
When they arrived, the front gates were thrown open. Inside the living room, luggage was piled by the door. Doña Elvira was shouting orders at a frightened Rosa, while Mauricio stood near the staircase, holding a crying Renata by her wrist.
"Let go of me! I want my mommy!" seven-year-old Renata sobbed, trying to pull away from her father’s grip.
"Shut up, Renata!" Mauricio snapped, his face flushed red with manic frustration. "Your mother is a deceitful traitor who ruined our lives! You’re coming with me to Texas!"
"She isn't going anywhere with you, Mauricio!" Daniela’s voice echoed like thunder as she burst through the front doors.
Renata gasped. "Mommy!"
Mauricio whipped around, stepping in front of the child, pulling a crumpled paper from his coat pocket. "Stay back, Daniela! I have a temporary emergency custody petition filed by my attorney this morning! Until a family court judge rules on our divorce, I have equal parental rights, and I am taking my daughter out of the country!"
"You don't have equal rights, Mauricio," Tomás Valdés said calmly, stepping into the room alongside the federal agents. "You are under active federal investigation for international money laundering and corporate embezzlement. The judge signed an immediate border-control freeze on your passport twenty minutes ago."
Mauricio’s eyes widened with sheer horror. "What?"
"And as for your emergency custody petition," Tomás continued, holding up a fresh judicial order, "Family Court Judge Mendez has issued an ex-parte protection order granting full physical custody of Renata Serrano-Alcázar to her mother, pending criminal proceedings against you."
One of the federal officers stepped forward, placing a hand on his holster. "Mr. Alcázar, step away from the child slowly."
Doña Elvira let out a dramatic shriek, grabbing her chest. "You can't do this to my son! He is a respected director! Daniela is a nobody!"
"Your son is a thief, Elvira," Daniela said, walking past Mauricio without an ounce of fear, kneeling down, and opening her arms to Renata.
Renata broke free from Mauricio’s limp grip and threw herself into her mother’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Daniela held her daughter tightly, pressing her lips against her forehead, her heart finally finding its rhythm again.
"It’s okay, my love," Daniela whispered softly into Renata’s hair. "Mommy’s here. Nobody is ever going to take you away from me again."

Mauricio stood frozen, looking at his wife holding their daughter. For the first time, he realized the absolute magnitude of his defeat. He hadn't just lost a hospital or a fortune; he had destroyed his family, his honor, and his future—all for a toxic mix of pride, greed, and vanity.
"Take them into custody," the federal agent commanded.
