Chapter 5 - The Trial of Silence and the Shattered MaskSix months later.

The Franklin County Courthouse in downtown Columbus was packed to capacity. Reporters from regional television stations and national crime networks crowded the marble hallways, broadcasting live updates on what the media had dubbed "The Velvet Poisoner of Millstone."
Inside Courtroom 4B, the air was dense and cold.
Evelyn Ward sat at the defense table.
The pristine, diamond-adorned millionaire who had once commanded every room she entered was now stripped of her glamour. She wore a dull orange county jail jumpsuit. Her gray-blond hair was unstyled, streak-marked with gray, and her hands were constrained by heavy iron belly-chains.
Her legal team—four of the most expensive defense attorneys in the Midwest—sat beside her, looking grim as they flipped through thick stacks of evidence.
On the witness stand sat Laura Ward.
She wore a crisp navy blazer, her dark hair neatly pulled back, her posture straight and unyielding. She looked directly at the jury, her voice calm, clear, and ringing with absolute truth.
“Mrs. Ward,” the lead prosecutor asked, standing before the jury box. “Can you describe for the court what happened on the night of August 14th?”
“My son, Noah, began screaming uncontrollably whenever he attempted to nurse,” Laura testified smoothly. “My mother-in-law, Evelyn Ward, claimed that my milk had 'gone bad' due to my bitterness and emotional instability. She attempted to convince my husband that I was unfit to care for our son.”
“And what did you do when you suspected foul play?”
“I utilized my background as an office manager and auditor,” Laura explained. “I secured a hidden camera inside a decorative wooden clock facing my nightstand and recorded the bedroom overnight.”
“Your Honor,” the prosecutor said, turning toward the bench. “Permission to play State’s Exhibit 4—the full, unedited video recording recovered from the defendant’s device.”
“Permission granted,” the judge ruled.
The courtroom lights were dimmed. Two large wall-mounted screens illuminated the room.
The entire jury, the judge, the press gallery, and Evelyn’s own defense team watched in stunned, breathless silence as the 4K video played across the monitors.
The footage left no room for doubt:
Evelyn Ward entering at 2:14 AM wearing latex gloves.
The clear view of the brown glass bottle containing concentrated capsaicin paste.
The meticulous spiking of Laura’s nursing ointment and nursing bras.
The horrifying, chilling monologue delivered directly over the empty crib.
Gasps echoed through the public gallery. Two jurors covered their mouths in visible horror. One elderly woman on the jury panel glared at Evelyn with pure, righteous fury.
Evelyn’s lead attorney leaned over, whispering frantically to her, begging her to maintain composure.
But the sociopathic mask that Evelyn had worn for sixty years finally snapped completely.
Evelyn stood up abruptly, her heavy chains rattling violently against the wooden table!
“HE WAS MY GRANDSON!” Evelyn shrieked, her voice echoing off the high plaster ceiling like a wild animal. “HE WAS A WARD! HE BELONGED TO ME! SHE WAS RUINING HIM! SHE WAS MAKING HIM WEAK!”
“Defendant will be seated!” the judge slammed his gavel down furiously. “Bailiffs, secure the defendant!”
“SHE IS A NOBODY!” Evelyn screamed, spitting as two heavy bailiffs wrestled her back into her chair. “A CHEAP LITTLE CLERK WHO STOLE MY SON AND TRIED TO TAKE MY BABY! I WAS SAVING HIM! I WAS MAKING HIM MINE!”
Ethan stood up from his seat in the front row of the gallery. He didn't look angry. He looked at his mother with absolute, cold disgust.
“You didn't save anyone, Mom,” Ethan said, his voice carrying clearly over her shrieks. “You’re going to die in a cage.”
“Order in the court!” the judge shouted, slamming the gavel down three times. “Bailiffs, remove the defendant from the courtroom until she can control herself!”
As Evelyn was dragged out of the courtroom, kicking and screaming her curses into the hallway, Laura stepped down from the witness stand.
She walked straight to Ethan, who reached out his hand, locking his fingers tightly into hers.
Two days later, the jury returned a verdict after less than forty-five minutes of deliberation:
Guilty of Attempted Felonious Assault on a Minor.
Guilty of Chemical Poisoning and Contamination of Household Goods.
Guilty of Child Endangerment.

Guilty of Obstruction of Justice.
The judge sentenced Evelyn Ward to thirty-two years in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction without the possibility of parole—effectively ensuring that the seventy-one-year-old woman would spend the remainder of her life behind iron bars. Furthermore, the court issued a permanent, lifetime restraining order prohibiting Evelyn or any of her legal representatives from ever contacting Laura, Ethan, or Noah Ward.
