Chapter 4 - The Boardroom TrapThe executive boardroom at the First National Bank of Evanston smelled of old mahogany, expensive leather, and suppressed panic.

Preston Hail sat at the head of the long walnut table, his white dinner jacket replaced by a rumpled designer suit that looked five years too old for him. Across from him sat three senior partners of his collapsing tech firm, their faces pale as ghosts. Standing near the door were Vanessa’s lawyers, sweating profusely despite the humming air conditioning.
The heavy oak doors swung open.
Lauren walked in first. She wore a sharp, tailored navy-blue trench coat over a simple charcoal dress, her head held high, the old schoolteacher timidity completely gone from her stride. Behind her walked Gray, flanked by two legal advisors carrying thick leather briefcases.
"L-Lauren?" Preston stammered, half-rising from his chair before sinking back down as Gray’s cold gaze locked onto him. "What is the meaning of this? Your lawyers froze our corporate accounts this morning! We are facing ruin!"
"Ruin?" Lauren pulled out a chair opposite Preston and sat down with absolute grace, resting her hands neatly on the polished wood. "Preston, you spent six months helping my sister orchestrate a public humiliation designed to break my spirit so I would sign away my mother’s estate. You called that business. I call it an introduction."
Vanessa’s chief attorney adjusted his tie frantically, clearing his throat. "Miss Mitchell, Mr. Hail, let’s not be hasty. There’s been a misunderstanding regarding a probate document and—"
"There is no misunderstanding," Gray said, taking the seat beside Lauren and dropping a thick dossier onto the table with a heavy thud. He slid it across the mahogany toward Preston. "That is a forensic audit of every shell company your startup used to siphon funds from city municipal contracts over the last eighteen months. Federal indictments are already signed. The only thing keeping the marshals from dragging you out of this building in handcuffs is page twelve."
Preston’s trembling hands flipped open the dossier. His eyes scanned the lines of text until they locked onto a single sentence at the bottom.
Condition of Stay of Prosecution: Immediate and unconditional surrender of all claims, properties, and corporate shares associated with the Langford-Mitchell estate, transferred in full to Lauren Mitchell-Valente.
"You can't do this!" Vanessa burst through the side office door, her face contorted with rage and mascara running down her cheeks. She had rushed straight from her wrecked honeymoon suite. "She’s a nobody! She’s a teacher who grades papers for pennies! Everything we built—"
"You built nothing, Vanessa," Lauren said, turning her head to look directly at her sister. Her voice was as cold and clear as winter ice. "You inherited a name you didn't respect, and you spent your life trying to step on everyone else to feel tall. Mom spent twenty years protecting me from people like you. But she didn't realize you had become one of them."
Vanessa lunged forward, her hands clawing at the air, but Gray’s men intercepted her instantly, holding her back with immovable force.

"Sign it, Preston," Gray said quietly, checking his platinum wristwatch. "You have sixty seconds before I let the Justice Department release the wire transcripts."
Preston looked at Vanessa, then down at the pen shaking violently between his fingers. With a ragged sob of absolute defeat, he grabbed the pen and scrawled his signature across the dotted line.
