Chapter 5 - The Reckoning"Nobody moves!" Chase roared.

In a flash of desperate madness, Chase reached inside his navy suit jacket and whipped out a sleek, snub-nosed snubby revolver he had kept concealed in his shoulder holster.

Lorraine shrieked, falling backward into her chair. Brooke screamed, dropping to her knees beside the table.

Henry froze, his hands raised in terror. "Chase! Put the gun down!"

"Shut up, old man!" Chase screamed, his eyes wild, sweat pouring down his forehead. "You were my payout! Ten million dollars! I had the jet booked from Lexington Airport at noon!"

He grabbed Brooke by the arm, yanking her up from the floor and pressing the cold barrel of the gun against her temple. Brooke sobbed hysterically, her eyes wide with unimaginable terror. "Chase, please! Please don't!"

"Shut up, Brooke!" Chase snarled, backing toward the grand French doors leading to the veranda. "Henry, execute that wire transfer right now! Execute it or I blow her head off!"

Henry’s hands shook wildly over the terminal keypad. "Okay! Okay! Just don't hurt my daughter! I’m typing it now!"

"No, Dad!" Grace shouted.

Ethan didn't panic. He didn't shout.

He stood six feet away from Chase, his body completely relaxed, his eyes locked onto Chase’s gun hand. His medical training—years of remaining absolute stone under the bloodiest trauma room conditions—took over entirely.

"Charles," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic frequency. "Look at me."

"Shut up, Ethan!" Chase yelled, his finger trembling on the trigger.

"You're holding a double-action hammerless revolver," Ethan noted calmly, taking one slow, deliberate step forward. "The safety is off, but the trigger pull is nine pounds. Your index finger is sweating. If you squeeze it while your hand is shaking like that, the hammer will slip before the cylinder rotates."

Chase blinked, his eyes darting down to his hand for a fraction of a millisecond.

That fraction of a millisecond was all Ethan needed.

Ethan lunged forward with explosive, terrifying speed.

He caught Chase’s right wrist with his left hand, forcing the barrel of the revolver straight up toward the coffered ceiling. With his right hand, Ethan slammed a swift, open-palm strike directly into Chase’s sternum.

BANG!

The gun discharged into the plaster ceiling, showering the table with white dust.

Brooke fell away, scrambling frantically into her mother’s arms.

Ethan twisted Chase’s wrist with brutal leverage. The revolver clattered harmlessly onto the hardwood floor. Before Chase could recover, Ethan swept Chase’s legs out from under him, slamming the fraudster face-down onto the antique rug, pinning his arms behind his back with one heavy knee.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The front double doors of the mansion were kicked open.

Sheriff Vance and four armed Federal Marshals burst into the foyer with drawn weapons, their tactical boots booming against the marble.

"Federal agents! Don't move!" a marshal shouted.

Ethan raised his hands calmly, keeping Chase pinned to the floor. "He’s secured, Officer. The weapon is on the floor."

The marshals rushed forward, pulling Chase up off the ground and slamming him against the mahogany dining table. Metal handcuffs clicked tightly around Chase’s wrists.

"Charles Edward Miller," the lead marshal declared, reading from a laminated card. "You are under arrest by order of the United States District Court for securities fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny."

Chase, his navy suit ruined, his hair matted with plaster dust, glared at Ethan with murderous venom as he was dragged toward the door. "I'll kill you, Ethan! I swear to God I'll kill you!"

Ethan stood up, wiping the dust from his clean white shirt. He didn't answer. He simply watched quietly as the man who had traded his soul for a red Ferrari was dragged away in steel chains.

The dining room fell silent once more.

Lorraine was sobbing uncontrollably into her silk napkin. Brooke lay huddled on the floor, weeping in shame and terror, her expensive cream dress torn and dirty.

Henry Whitmore sat at the head of the table, looking down at his hands. He looked aged by twenty years. The grand construction mogul, the proud patriarch who had judged men by their cars and their suits, was completely broken by his own foolish pride.

Slowly, Henry stood up. He walked over to Ethan, his head bowed low.

"Mr. Hale..." Henry’s voice cracked with deep, painful emotion. "I... I don't know what to say. You saved my life. You saved my family. And I treated you like dirt."

Ethan looked at the old man gently. "You were trying to protect your daughters, sir. You just were looking at the wrong things."

Henry looked over at Grace, who was standing near the window, tears shining in her soft brown eyes.

"Grace," Henry whispered, his eyes filled with profound remorse. "Can you ever forgive me?"

Grace walked over to her father, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Of course, Dad. Of course."
