Chapter 2 - The Screaming Silence

From the upper floor of the house, the sound of Mariana’s sharp, horrified gasp cut through the quiet hallway, followed immediately by the heavy, rhythmic sound of her weeping alongside Valeria. Rafael walked slowly up the stairs, each step feeling as heavy as lead.

He entered Valeria’s bedroom. The room was a sanctuary of childhood innocence—walls painted a soft pastel pink, shelves lined with storybooks about magical kingdoms, and a vanity table with a small plastic mirror where Valeria spent hours practicing different braids on her dolls.

Mariana was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding the denim jacket in her hands. Valeria was sitting between her mother’s knees, her head bare. In the bright overhead light of the bedroom, the true horror of what Brenda had done was fully visible.

It wasn't a neat, professional haircut. Brenda had used heavy-duty animal or industrial clippers, dragging them across the child's scalp with a violent, reckless negligence. The skin was red, irritated, and marred by several small, bloody scratches where the metal blades had bitten too deep into the tender flesh. Patches of uneven, jagged stubble remained in some places, while other areas were completely bald, showing the white, vulnerable curve of the little girl’s skull.

Mariana looked up at Rafael, her tear-streaked face twisted in a mask of absolute horror and maternal fury. "She did this on purpose, Rafa," Mariana whispered, her voice shaking with a rage that matched his own. "This isn't a bad haircut. This is an assault. Look at her poor skin! She has scrapes behind her ears. She was holding Valeria down, Rafa! Vale told me her cousins held her arms so she couldn't move!"

Rafael felt a cold, metallic taste rise in the back of his throat. He walked over to the bed and knelt down in front of his daughter, taking her small, cold hands in his. "Vale... look at me, my princess."

Valeria slowly lifted her head. Her beautiful brown eyes were bloodshot, the skin around them swollen and puffy from hours of crying. She looked at her reflection in the glass of the window and immediately covered her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "I look ugly, Daddy! I look like a monster! I don't want to go to school! I don't want anyone to see me!"

"You are not ugly, Valeria," Rafael said, his voice cracking as he pulled her hands away from her face, forcing her to look into his eyes. "Listen to me very carefully. You are the most beautiful girl in the world. The person who did this to you did it because she is small, bitter, and miserable. She wanted to steal your joy because she doesn't have any of her own. But she didn't steal your beauty, Vale. Hair grows back. It will grow back thicker, longer, and more beautiful than before. But the ugly heart that woman has? That will never change."

Mariana immediately went to the bathroom and returned with a warm cloth, gently cleaning the small scratches on Valeria’s scalp with antiseptic cream. The little girl winced with every touch, her small body trembling with a residual terror that would take months to fade.

Downstairs, the landline phone in the kitchen began to ring. Since Rafael had blocked Brenda on his personal cell phone, she was now targeting the house line.

"Don't answer it," Mariana said, her eyes flashing with ice.

"I have to," Rafael replied quietly. "I need her to understand exactly where she stands before the bank opening tomorrow."

Rafael walked downstairs, walked into the kitchen, and picked up the receiver. Before he could even place it to his ear, Brenda’s voice came screaming through the speaker, so loud and shrill that it distorted the audio.

"Rafael! Are you out of your mind?! I just tried to pay for our groceries at Soriana and the card was declined! Then I checked my online banking and the rent transfer for tomorrow is gone! What kind of low-class, petty revenge is this? Because of a stupid haircut? You’re going to let your nieces starve and get evicted over a little hair? You’re a monster, Rafael! Family doesn't do this!"

Rafael waited until she ran out of breath, his own respiration steady, cold, and calculated. "Are you finished, Brenda?"

"No, I am not finished! You call the bank right now and put the money back! Don Humberto just emailed me saying you withdrew as my guarantor! I have thirty days to find a new guarantor or I'll be thrown onto the street! Do you hear me?!"

"I hear you perfectly," Rafael said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "And here is what you need to understand. For three years, I have been your brother. I have been the father your daughters didn't have. I have paid for the roof over your head, the food in your mouth, and the clothes on your back. And how did you repay me? You took my seven-year-old daughter, a child who loved you, and you used your envy to mutilate her. You let your daughters hold her down while you used clippers to cut her skin and humiliate her."

"It was a joke, Rafa! She was being an arrogant little brat, showing off her clothes—"

"If you ever call this house again," Rafael interrupted, his tone turning into a low, terrifying promise, "I will take the medical reports of the cuts on my daughter's scalp, along with the testimony she just gave her mother, and I will file formal criminal charges against you for child abuse and assault. Do you think a judge in Querétaro will care about your 'joke' when they see the pictures of a seven-year-old girl's bleeding head?"

A sudden, sharp silence fell over the line. For the first time, Brenda sounded nervous. "You... you wouldn't do that to your own sister."

May you like

"You stopped being my sister the moment you turned those clippers on my child," Rafael said. "As of this moment, you do not exist to me. Renata and Abril do not exist to me. Figure out how to pay your rent. Figure out how to buy your food. You wanted to teach my daughter that life isn't about looking pretty? Let me teach you that life is about paying your own bills. Goodbye, Brenda."

He slammed the receiver down on the cradle. Then, he reached behind the kitchen counter, unplugged the phone line from the wall socket, and threw the cord into the trash can.
