Chapter 6 - The True Meaning of ProtectionWhen Maria entered the study that evening, her shoulders were no longer rounded inward with defensive fear. The rumor mill inside the mansion moved faster than police dispatches; everyone on the staff already knew that the badge protecting her ex-husband had been shattered into a thousand pieces.

She stood before Lorenzo’s desk, her hands resting naturally at her sides—no longer hiding her wrists, because the red marks were healing, and the man who put them there was behind bars.

“You wanted to see me, Mr. Duca?” she asked, her voice steady, carrying a quiet strength that hadn't been there when she first arrived.

Lorenzo stood up, walking slowly around the desk until he stopped a few feet away from her. He looked at her not with pity, but with profound, absolute respect.

“Derek Mitchell is no longer with the Chicago Police Department,” Lorenzo said quietly. “He was arrested this afternoon on charges of domestic battery and municipal corruption. His uncle has been suspended pending a federal audit.”

Maria closed her eyes. A single tear tracked down her cheek, but this time, it wasn't a tear of terror or grief. It was the physical weight of an invisible mountain finally sliding off her shoulders.

“He can’t hurt me anymore?” she whispered, her voice cracking.

“Never again,” Lorenzo promised, his gray eyes holding hers with unyielding resolve. “If anyone from his old unit or his family tries to contact you, they answer directly to me.”

Maria looked up at the mafia boss—the man the city feared, the man the respectable elites whispered about in hushed tones—and realized that true protection had nothing to do with legal badges or clean reputations. It had everything to do with honor.

“Why?” she asked softly. “You didn't have to go to war with the police department for a maid.”

Lorenzo’s expression softened into a rare, quiet warmth.

“In this house, Maria, nobody is 'just a maid,'” he said firmly. “Under my roof, you belong to us. And we protect our own.”

Maria offered a small, genuine smile—the first one she had worn in years. The city outside the tall windows was still dark and dangerous, but for the first time in her life, she knew she was safe in the shadows of the Duca empire.
