Chapter 2 - The Silent Counter-Attack

At 3:15 a.m., Esteban sat in his home office in Zapopan. The house was dead silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator downstairs and the soft, steady breathing of Mariana and Emiliano, whom he had brought home from the hospital and tucked safely into his own bed under his direct watch.

He opened three secure terminal windows on his dual-monitor workstation.

As the external expert in digital evidence analysis for the Jalisco Attorney General’s Office, Esteban knew how corporate fraud and asset stripping worked. He also knew Mauricio Cárdenas inside and out. Mauricio was a man of expensive tastes, high-stakes gambling debts, and a dangerous hubris.

By 4:00 a.m., Esteban had accessed the corporate server of Rivas Automation & Industrial Systems.

What he found made his blood run cold.

Over the past eight months, Mauricio and Lorena had systematically drained three corporate contingency accounts, siphoning over 4.2 million pesos into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under a fraudulent corporate identity. Furthermore, they had initiated fraudulent loan applications using company assets as collateral—loan applications that bore Esteban’s forged electronic signature.

The plot wasn't just to divorce him and take the children; it was to frame him for corporate embezzlement and tax fraud, bankrupt his company, strip him of his assets, and throw him in prison while Lorena and Mauricio walked away scot-free with millions and his children.

"You greedy bastards," Esteban whispered to the empty room.

He didn't panic. Panic was for amateurs. Instead, he systematically deployed a series of automated scripts he had pre-configured for emergency contingencies years ago.

First, he executed a complete system lock on all corporate banking tokens, freezing every single company account associated with Mauricio Cárdenas’s financial clearance level.

Second, he generated an automated compliance report and dispatched it directly to the federal anti-corruption unit and the state fiscal prosecutor’s office, attaching the digital audit trail, the forged signatures, and the IP logs tracing directly back to Mauricio’s home terminal and laptop.

Third, he packaged the entire home surveillance archive—the footage of Mariana being abused, Teresa's complicity, Lorena's abandonment, and Mauricio’s presence in his home—into an encrypted, read-only digital dossier, uploading it to a cloud vault accessible only by a court-appointed magistrate and his personal attorney, Mateo Morales.

At 6:30 a.m., his phone rang. It was Mauricio.

Esteban let it ring twice before tapping the speakerphone button.

"Esteban? What the hell is going on?" Mauricio’s voice was laced with frantic panic. "The corporate accounts are locked! The bank’s compliance department is calling my phone asking about unauthorized fund transfers! Did you trigger a security audit?"

Esteban leaned back in his leather chair, his voice ice-cold and utterly devoid of emotion.

"Good morning, Mauricio. How’s the weather in the corporate underworld?"

"What are you talking about?" Mauricio blustered, trying to recover his footing. "Listen to me, man. Lorena is terrified. She’s filing for temporary custody and a restraining order this morning. If you cooperate, we can settle this quietly. You sign over the Zapopan house and your shares in the subsidiary, and we let you see the kids on weekends."

Esteban let out a low, dark chuckle that made the line go dead silent for three full seconds.

"Mauricio," Esteban said softly. "You and Lorena spent months building a house of cards. You forged my signature, you stole four million pesos, you abused my daughter, and you thought you could play me for a fool."

"You don't have proof of—"

"I have everything," Esteban interrupted, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Every financial transfer, every forged document, every minute of video footage from my cameras showing you in my house while my seven-year-old daughter was forced to play mother to an infant. Federal marshals are already en route to your office and your home. Enjoy your coffee while you still can."

He hung up without waiting for a reply.
