Chapter 3 - The Vow on the MarbleThe silence that fell over the cathedral was entirely different from the panic of seconds prior.

It was a stunned, heavy disbelief.
Three hundred pairs of eyes shifted from the powerful Don standing at the altar to the high wooden balcony where a thin, pale young woman in a black maid’s uniform slowly stepped out from behind the burgundy curtain.
Willow held her silver spray bottle tightly in her left hand. Her uniform was clean, but it was unmistakably the attire of a domestic servant. Her cracked, chapped hands were visible against the black fabric of her apron, and her canvas shoes made no sound as she stood at the top of the carpeted stairs.
“Casper...” Marlon whispered beside him, his eyes wide in rare surprise. “What are you doing?”
“Fixing my life,” Casper replied without looking away from her.
Willow stood at the top of the stairs, her knees shaking so violently she thought she might collapse onto the carpet. Her mind raced. Why is he calling me? Did I do something wrong? Did I drop something?
Casper took three deliberate steps toward the base of the balcony staircase.
“Willow,” he called out again, his voice softer now, carrying a warmth no man in Boston had ever heard him use before. “Walk down here. Please.”
The word please from the lips of Casper Falcone sounded like an impossibility to everyone who knew him.
Willow took a slow, agonizing breath. She set the spray bottle down on the wooden banister, wiped her palms against her apron, and began to descend the stairs.
Every step felt like walking through deep water. She kept her eyes lowered, her chin close to her chest, as she had done for six years whenever the powerful figures of Boston moved past her.
When her thin shoes touched the main aisle floor, Casper was standing three feet away.
He did not look at her worn shoes or her chapped hands. He looked straight into her soft brown eyes, seeing the quiet, unyielding courage that had saved his life and his empire.
He reached out and gently took her right hand in his.
His hand was large, warm, and powerful. Her hand was small, rough, and trembling.
The contrast was staggering, yet as his fingers closed around hers, Willow felt an electric jolt of warmth spread through her cold chest—a sudden, unshakeable sense of safety she had not felt since her father had passed away years ago.
Casper turned to the Bishop, who was standing beside the altar holding his gold-leafed book, his jaw practically resting on his chest.
“Continue the service, Your Grace,” Casper commanded smoothly.
The Bishop blinked rapidly, adjusting his round wire glasses. “Mr... Mr. Falcone... this young woman... is not registered on the marriage license filed with the archdiocese—”
“I own the archdiocese’s private trust fund, Bishop,” Casper interrupted quietly. “Amend the license.”
August Falcone stepped forward, his silver cane clicking against the marble floor. He stopped beside Casper, staring at Willow with his sharp, aged eyes. He looked at her uniform, then at her face, seeing the raw honesty and fierce resilience written in her posture.
“Who is she, Casper?” August asked softly.
“She is Willow Reed,” Casper declared, his voice echoing through the grand hall. “She is the woman who saved the Falcone empire while everyone else in this room was calculating how to sell it.”
August looked at Willow for three long seconds. Then, to the absolute shock of every remaining guest, the old patriarch bowed his head slightly toward the little maid.
“Then she is a Falcone,” August stated firmly. “Proceed, Your Grace.”
The Bishop wiped his forehead with a linen handkerchief, turned a page in his book, and cleared his throat loudly.
“Willow Reed,” the Bishop said, his voice quavering slightly. “Do you take Casper Falcone to be your lawful wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?”
Willow stood in the center of the grand cathedral, holding the hand of the most feared man in Boston.
She thought of Winnie lying in her small bed in South Boston, drawing pictures of castles on old scrap paper. She thought of the doctor’s warning, the unpaid hospital bills, and the endless, cold nights she had spent scrubbing grease from kitchen tiles.
She looked up into Casper’s flat gray eyes—and saw, for the first time, that they were no longer flat or cold. They were filled with a deep, silent promise of protection.
“I do,” Willow whispered clearly.
Casper reached into his vest pocket. He did not pull out the diamond ring intended for Cordelia. Instead, he pulled out a simple, elegant band of solid platinum that had belonged to his grandmother—a ring he had carried with him for ten years, waiting for a woman worthy of wearing it.
He slid the smooth, cool metal onto Willow’s thin, rough ring finger.
It fit perfectly.
“And Casper Falcone,” the Bishop continued, “do you take Willow Reed to be your lawful wedded wife...?”
“I do,” Casper said without waiting for the rest of the vow.
He stepped closer to Willow, taking her other hand in his, bowing his tall frame slightly so he could look directly into her eyes.
“By the power vested in me,” the Bishop said quickly, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Casper gently raised Willow’s right hand, lifted her chapped, scarred knuckles to his lips, and pressed a long, soft, reverent kiss against her skin.
He did not kiss her on the lips for the public to gawk at. He kissed the hand that worked, the hand that endured, and the hand that had saved him.
“From this second, Willow,” Casper whispered against her skin, his voice rich with quiet fury and absolute devotion, “you will never scrub another floor, you will never skip another meal, and no person in this world will ever make you feel invisible again.”
May you like
Tears finally spilled over Willow’s lower lashes, cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks.
Casper wrapped his arm around her small waist, drawing her close against his tailored coat, and turned to face the remaining guests of Boston high society as the brand-new master and mistress of the Falcone empire.
