Chapter 6 - The Silver Locket

Six months later.

The sunset over the Taconic Mountains painted the winter sky in brilliant shades of violet, gold, and pink.

Fresh white snow covered the pine trees lining the quiet ravine off the Taconic Parkway—the exact spot where, eleven years ago, a overturned car had changed two lives forever.

A sleek black SUV pulled up to the scenic overlook.

Julian stepped out, wearing a long charcoal cashmere coat. He walked around to the passenger side and opened the door for Mara, who stepped out wrapped in a warm white wool coat.

The air was crisp, clean, and quiet, save for the crunch of snow beneath their boots.

They walked hand in hand to the wooden overlook railing, looking down into the peaceful valley below.

"I haven't been back here since that night," Mara whispered, her breath misting in the cold air.

"Neither have I," Julian said softly. He turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his. "I used to hate this spot. For ten years, every time I thought about this ravine, I felt pain, cold, and dark memories of trapped metal."

He reached out, his long fingers gently picking up the small silver locket hanging against her coat.

"But now," Julian continued, his voice filled with deep, overwhelming emotion, "when I look at this place, I only see the night I met the bravest, most beautiful soul in the world."

Mara smiled, tears of pure happiness brimming in her gray eyes. "I was terrified that night, Julian. I was just a twenty-one-year-old girl holding your hand in the dark, praying we wouldn't freeze."

"You kept me alive, Mara," Julian said gently. "And you saved me again six months ago when you walked into my home."

Julian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.

He didn't kneel in the snow; instead, he stood close to her, opening the box to reveal a magnificent ring.

It was not the pink diamond Celeste had lusted after.

It was a custom-designed ring featuring a flawless, brilliant-cut blue sapphire, encircled by tiny diamonds formed precisely in the pattern of the constellation of Orion.

"I don't want a marriage built on lies, debt, or social status," Julian whispered, looking directly into her eyes. "I want a life built on truth, courage, and the love that started right here in the snow."

He looked at her with complete, devotion.

"Mara Ellison... will you share your life with me? Will you marry me?"

Mara looked at the sparkling blue sapphire reflecting the sunset, then raised her eyes to the man who had fought for her honor, restored her dignity, and loved her unconditionally.

"Yes, Julian," Mara whispered, her voice filled with joyful tears. "Yes! A thousand times, yes!"

Julian smiled—a breathtaking, radiant expression—and slipped the constellation ring onto her finger before pulling her into his arms.

He brought his lips down to hers, kissing her deeply under the twilight sky, as the first stars of the evening began to appear above the Taconic Mountains.

High above them, shining brighter than all the rest in the clear winter night, was the constellation of Orion—the Hunter who protects lost travelers, guiding them all the way home.
