Chapter 5 - The Weight of GoldThe rain had stopped by dawn, leaving the gardens of the Moretti estate gleaming under a soft, golden sunlight.

In the sunroom overlooking the lily pond, breakfast had been set out on a long white linen table. Fresh croissants, warm berries, scrambled eggs, and dark coffee filled the room with a rich, peaceful aroma.

Sophia sat at the table, wearing a simple, elegant dark green dress that Rosa had tailored for her overnight. Her hair was neatly pinned back, her skin flushed with healthy color for the first time in weeks.

Beside her, Emma was sitting on two stacked chair cushions so she could reach the table comfortably. She had a napkin tucked into her collar and was carefully spreading strawberry jam over a croissant with a butter knife, moving with intense concentration.

Alessandro sat at the head of the table, reading the morning edition of the Wall Street Journal.

A small headline on page four read: Prominent Midtown Law Firm Collapses Overnight Amid State Ethics Probe; Lead Partner Disbarred.

Alessandro folded the paper quietly and set it beside his coffee cup.

Marcus walked into the sunroom, stepping softly across the stone floor. He leaned down and whispered something into Alessandro’s ear.

Alessandro nodded once, his expression entirely unreadable. "Good. Have him transferred to the upstate facility."

Marcus bowed his head slightly and retreated from the room, leaving the family in peace.

Sophia looked up from her plate, her eyes meeting Alessandro’s across the short distance. She had seen the newspaper headline. She knew what Marcus’s arrival meant.

"Is it over?" Sophia asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Alessandro picked up his coffee cup, taking a slow sip before looking at her.

"Daniel Price was arrested last night," Alessandro said plainly. "He has been remanded to a maximum-security state facility without bail, pending trial for extortion and felony fraud. He will be there for a very long time."

Sophia let out a deep, trembling breath, her shoulders sagging as six years of constant, suffocating fear finally evaporated into thin air. A single tear escaped her eye, tracing a path down her cheek, but she didn't wipe it away.

"And Vance?" she asked.

"Richard Vance no longer practices law," Alessandro replied smoothly. "He is currently selling his Park Avenue penthouse to pay off his firm’s liquid debts. To me."

Emma looked up from her croissant, her small mouth smeared with red jam. "Is the ghost gone forever, Mr. Alessandro?"

Alessandro looked down at the little girl. The coldness that usually defined his life, the sharp, dangerous edge that kept the world at bay, softened completely.

"The ghost is gone, Emma," Alessandro said softly. "He’ll never bother you or your mother ever again."

Emma nodded sagely, taking a big bite of her croissant. "Good. Because he was very rude on the phone."

Sophia let out a quiet, breathless laugh, reaching over to wipe a spot of jam from her daughter’s chin. Then, she looked back at Alessandro, her dark eyes filled with a emotion so deep, so profound, it needed no words.

"How can I ever repay you, Mr. Moretti?" Sophia asked, her voice tight with emotion. "I am a maid. I could scrub these floors for a hundred years and I’d never earn enough to pay back what you did for us."

Alessandro set his coffee cup down. He stood up slowly, stepping around the table until he stood beside Sophia’s chair.

He reached down, his broad, warm hand gently covering hers where it rested on the white tablecloth.

"You are not scrubbing my floors anymore, Sophia," Alessandro said, his deep voice carrying a quiet, absolute gravity that vibrated through the sunny room.

Sophia blinked, looking up at him in confusion. "What... what do you mean?"

"Yesterday, my legal team finalized the creation of the Delgado Educational Trust," Alessandro explained softly. "It endows Emma’s education through university, fully funded, with an independent board of trustees."

Sophia’s mouth opened slightly, but no words came out.

"And as for you," Alessandro continued, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat, "I have appointed a new head housekeeper to manage the estate’s daily operations and staff. You are stepping into the role of Director of Household Operations, with a formal salary, full health benefits, and private living quarters in the west wing."

Sophia stared at him, tears streaming down her face now. "Alessandro... I... I don't know what to say..."

"Say yes," Alessandro murmured, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. "Because this house has been cold and quiet for twenty years, Sophia. And in four short days, you and your daughter have given it something money could never buy."

Emma stopped eating, watching them with her big, curious dark eyes.

"What did we give it, Mr. Alessandro?" Emma asked, leaning forward on her cushions.

May you like

Alessandro looked from the mother to the child, a quiet, genuine smile warming his dark features.

"Life, Emma," Alessandro whispered softly. "You gave it life."
