CHAPTER 2 — The Letter (Short Version)

Reverend Price opened the brown leather folder in the quiet church.

Inside was my father’s final statement.

He began reading.

My father confirmed only one person stayed by his side during his illness: me. He stated clearly that I handled all medical care, decisions, and end-of-life arrangements.

Then came the truth.

He wrote that Tessa Vale was never part of his life during his final months. She was not a caregiver, not a visitor with permission, and not someone he recognized as family.

Tessa’s face changed immediately.

Evan shifted in his seat.

Margaret tried to interrupt, but the reverend continued reading.

My father stated there was no record of Tessa’s involvement and no approval for her to present herself as family in any capacity.

The room turned cold.

Then came the final part:

All records, communications, and estate authority were left only to me, and any misrepresentation of his wishes was to be challenged legally.

Evan stood up slowly.

Tessa tried to explain, but her voice no longer sounded confident.

Margaret insisted it was wrong, but the reverend calmly confirmed the document was legally signed and verified.

Then he added one more instruction:

A sealed envelope was to be opened only if someone lied in public during the service.

He held it up.

My father’s final message had not finished.

And the room realized the truth was still coming.
