Chapter 4 - Shadows and Silk

The lines between the act and reality began to blur. Dante had moved Elena into the suite adjoining his own. There was a connecting door, meant to remain locked. For the first two weeks, it was. But as the nights grew colder, the distance between them grew shorter.
Elena saw the man behind the myth. She saw Dante exhaust himself managing a massive empire, only to sit on the edge of his mother’s bed at 2:00 AM, reading her poetry until she fell asleep. She saw the heavy burden of power he carried. And Dante, in turn, saw a woman who could not be bought. He watched Elena treat his staff with deep respect. He watched her manage his mother’s worst days with a grace that took his breath away.
One night, a fierce thunderstorm rolled off Lake Michigan, knocking out the estate’s power. Elena, terrified of the dark since childhood, sat huddled by the window in her suite. The connecting door clicked open. Dante stood there, holding a single pillar candle, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his hair tousled.
He didn't ask if she was okay. He simply walked over, set the candle on the nightstand, and sat on the floor beside her chair.
“My father died in a storm like this,” Dante said quietly, staring out at the driving rain. It was the first time he had ever spoken of his father’s death. “I was twenty-two. They handed me an empire built on blood and steel and expected me to hold it together. I haven't slept through the night since.”
Elena slid down from the chair, sitting on the thick rug beside him. She didn't offer empty platitudes. She simply reached out and took his large, scarred hand in hers.
“You don't have to hold it all together tonight,” she whispered.

Dante turned his head. In the flickering candlelight, his eyes were entirely unguarded. He reached up, his knuckles brushing against her cheek, tracing the line of her jaw. His touch was hesitant, as if he expected her to pull away. When she leaned into his palm, a shudder wrecked through his massive frame.
He kissed her. It wasn't the polite, staged kiss they shared for the cameras. It was desperate, bruising, and deeply possessive. Elena’s hands tangled in his dark hair as he pulled her into his lap, the thunder outside entirely drowned out by the roaring in her ears. In the shadows of the master wing, the contract dissolved. The fake engagement shattered, replaced by a consuming, terrifying reality. They were no longer pretending.
