Chapter 3 - THE RAT CORNEREDAt 9:15 PM, the wind outside shrieked with hurricane force, hurling heavy branches against the slate roof of the estate. Inside the grand salon, the tension had thickened into a suffocating fog.

Nicholas Vale set his glass down on the mantelpiece and checked his watch for the tenth time in fifteen minutes. Beads of perspiration had formed along his hairline. He stepped toward the double doors, but the two armed guards crossed their arms, barring the exit with impassive expressions.

“This is an unlawful imprisonment!” Nicholas shouted, turning around to face the room. “Aunt Bianca, are you going to sit there while your son’s delinquent wife holds us hostage? The blizzard is knocking out the secondary power grid! We should be contacting our legal counsel, not waiting around for some imaginary deadline!”

Bianca stood up, her diamonds rattling. “He is right! Roman, this farce ends now! Order your thugs to stand down! Look at Nicholas—he is your cousin, he has served this family faithfully for a decade! You are humiliating all of us for a woman who has disgraced our name!”

Roman didn't rise from the sofa. He leaned back, his long legs stretched out, an unreadable smirk playing on his lips. “Sit down, Nicholas.”

“No, I will not sit down!” Nicholas’s voice cracked with rising hysteria. He pulled a slim silver smartphone from his inside coat pocket. “I’m calling the county sheriff. If you won't protect your mother’s legacy, I will.”

“Go ahead,” Hannah’s clear, commanding voice sliced through his panic.

She stood up from the sofa, closing her laptop with a sharp click. She smoothed the velvet across her hips, her posture regal, commanding every pair of eyes in the room. As she walked across the Persian rugs toward the fireplace, her steps were measured, deliberate, each heel strike sounding like the cocking of a hammer.

“Dial the sheriff, Nicholas,” Hannah said, stopping six feet from him. “Or better yet, dial Assistant United States Attorney Miller. Extension four-four-nine. You have his direct office line saved under 'Catering Logistics' in your contacts, don't you?”

Nicholas froze. His phone slipped slightly in his sweaty palm. “I... I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

The room went dead silent. Even Bianca ceased her indignant huffing, looking between her nephew and daughter-in-law with sudden confusion.

“You know precisely what I’m talking about,” Hannah said, her tone as clinical as a surgical blade. “Three days ago, when you generated the eight-million-dollar wire request, you didn't send it through the standard foundation portal. You routed it through a mirrored server hosting an IP address registered to a townhouse in Lincoln Park. A townhouse owned by your shell company, Vale Capital LLC.”

“That’s a lie!” Nicholas spat, his face flushing crimson. “You forged those records to frame me! You’re the one who moved the money! You admitted it in front of twenty people!”

“I did move it,” Hannah smiled, a cold, dazzling expression that sent a visible shudder through Nicholas’s frame. “I moved it away from Orion Holdings, the offshore account where your federal handler had arranged an automated intercept. I redirected it into the Bank of International Settlements in Basel, under an emergency fiduciary quarantine protocol.”

Nicholas took a step back, his back hitting the stone mantel. “You couldn't have... the system required my administrative secondary key...”

“You mean the key you kept encrypted on the thumb drive hidden inside your left cufflink?” Hannah tilted her head, her gaze dropping to the mother-of-pearl accessory he had been frantically rubbing all evening. “The micro-SD storage unit you used to smuggle internal auditing reports to the DOJ?”

Nicholas instinctively clamped his right hand over his left wrist, his eyes wide with animal terror.

Bianca looked at her nephew, the color rapidly draining from her cheeks. “Nicholas? What... what is she talking about? What cufflink?”

“He traded this family’s freedom to save his own skin, Bianca,” Hannah said, turning slowly to face her mother-in-law. “He stole twelve million dollars from your foundation over the last three years to cover his catastrophic gambling debts in Macau. When he realized my annual forensic audit would uncover the discrepancy this month, he went to the federal prosecutors. He promised to give them Roman on a silver platter in exchange for full immunity and an eight-figure civil settlement.”

“No... no, Nicholas wouldn't do that,” Bianca stammered, her voice trembling as she looked at the young man she had pampered since childhood. “Nicholas is a Duca!”

“Show her the cufflink, Nicholas,” Roman said, his voice rising from the sofa like thunder rolling over a mountain ridge.

Roman stood up. The relaxed posture vanished in an instant, replaced by a towering, lethal presence that filled the vast room with raw dread. He walked slowly toward the fireplace, each step deliberate.

“Take off the cufflink and hand it to my wife,” Roman commanded softly. “Or I will have Marco remove your arm at the elbow.”
