Chapter 5 - The Trap in the MountainsTessa backed away until her spine hit the reinforced glass window behind Declan's desk.

She kept her hands behind her back, her fingers clutching the titanium keycard so hard the edges dug into her skin. Her mind spun wildly, calculating options, distances, and probabilities.

She had no weapon. Liam had a twelve-gauge shotgun.

"Liam," she said, keeping her voice remarkably level, pulling from the icy detachment she had perfected over three years. "You're making a mistake. Declan will be here in minutes."

Liam threw his head back and laughed—a dark, unhinged sound that echoed off the high ceiling.

"Declan is currently chasing ghosts in an empty warehouse in Charlestown!" Liam spat, taking two steps forward. "By the time he realizes the tip was fake and drives two hours back up this mountain, I'll have burned this house to the ground, and you'll be in the trunk of my car."

Liam grinned, showing his yellowed teeth. "Do you have any idea how much Declan Hayes is going to pay to get you back? He choked me in his own lobby for looking at you. Imagine what he'll surrender when I send him one of your pretty fingers in a box."

Tessa's eyes narrowed. The fear that had been paralyzing her suddenly transformed into a sharp, white-hot fury.

She was tired of being a target. She was tired of men treating her like a leverage point, a piece of china, or a prize to be stolen.

She was Declan Hayes's woman. And Declan Hayes did not run.

"He won't pay a dime, Liam," Tessa said softly, her voice dropping into an icy register that caught Liam off guard.

"What did you say?" Liam frowned.

"I said he won't pay," she repeated, her eyes darting to the heavy bronze paperweight sitting on the edge of the desk to her right. "Because he isn't two hours away."

Liam hesitated for a fraction of a second, a flicker of doubt crossing his manic face. "What are you talking about—"

BANG!

The floor-to-ceiling glass window behind Tessa didn't just break—it exploded inward in a shower of thousands of tiny safety-glass diamonds.

A tall, dark figure swung through the shattered pane on a tactical rappelling cable, kicking Liam squarely in the chest with two heavy combat boots.

The force of the impact sent Liam flying backward across the room, smashing into the heavy oak bookshelf and dropping his shotgun.

Tessa covered her face as glass sprayed across her hair and sweater, but before she could fall, a massive, gloved arm wrapped securely around her waist, pulling her away from the edge of the broken window.

She looked up.

Declan.

He was breathing heavily, his tactical vest dusted with snow and glass. His pale blue eyes were burning with an absolute, terrifying rage that made the temperature in the room plunge below freezing.

Behind him, through the broken window, two black tactical helicopters hovered in the misty morning air, their heavy machine guns trained on the courtyard below. Sullivan and a squad of twenty heavily armed enforcers were already rappelling down onto the roof, systematically executing O'Connor's remaining men.

"Declan!" Tessa gasped, clinging to his tactical vest.

"Did he touch you?" Declan growled, his voice a dark, guttural rasp as his hands quickly scanned her arms, her neck, her face for any sign of injury.

"No! No, I'm okay!" she cried out. "You came back!"

"I never left," Declan murmured, pressing a quick, fierce kiss to her forehead. "I knew Liam would follow the GPS lure. I set the trap for him here."

Across the room, Liam groaned, coughing up blood as he scrambled to his knees, reaching desperately for his fallen shotgun.

Declan didn't even look at him.

He unholstered his black steel handgun with a smooth, practiced motion. Without taking his pale eyes off Tessa, without even turning his body, Declan raised his arm and pulled the trigger once.

BANG!

Liam collapsed onto the hardwood floor, motionless.

The quiet returned to the study, broken only by the rhythmic thump-thump-thump of the helicopter blades outside and the crackle of fire from the living room.

Declan lowered his weapon, sliding it back into its holster. He reached up, gently wiping a tiny speck of glass from Tessa's cheek, his large, scarred hand trembling slightly with the lingering adrenaline.

"It's over, Tessa," he whispered softly, pulling her close against his chest, wrapping his broad arms around her until she was completely enveloped in his strength. "The O'Connors are gone. The syndicate is secure."

Tessa rested her cheek against his tactical vest, listening to the powerful, steady rhythm of his heart. She looked over his shoulder at the ruined room, at the snow blowing in through the broken window, and realized that for the first time in three years, she wasn't afraid.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, fierce kiss that tasted of snow, gunpowder, and absolute victory.

"Take me home, Mr. Hayes," she murmured against his lips.

Declan smiled—a rare, brilliant, breathtaking smile that lit up his pale eyes.

"You are home, Queen," he replied.
