Chapter 2 - The Fall of Julian’s Firm

By eight o'clock the following morning, the morning news was already humming with whispers of a major shift in the New York corporate landscape. The sudden passing of real estate titan Eleanor Vance had remained quiet for weeks, but the reading of her will sent shockwaves through Manhattan's financial district.
Inside the sprawling top-floor penthouse of Vance Tower overlooking Central Park—where Mr. Harrison had insisted I stay with the children while my home underwent a complete security upgrade—the floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline.
Maya was sitting at a glass breakfast table, quietly buttering a piece of toast while Liam played happily with a set of wooden blocks on the plush rug. For the first time in years, the crushing weight of financial anxiety had vanished from my chest. There were no collectors calling my phone. There were no stack of overdue utility notices hidden under the dish rack.
The double doors of the penthouse study opened, and Mr. Harrison walked out, holding two crystal glasses of fresh juice alongside his laptop.
"Good morning, Clara," Mr. Harrison said, placing the glass on the table. "I trust you and the children rested well?"
"Better than we have in years, Arthur," I replied, sitting down across from him. "Thank you. For everything."
"You owe me no thanks. Your Aunt Eleanor was a visionary woman, and she spent the last decade of her life setting up safeguards to ensure that when this day came, you would be completely untouchable." Arthur opened his laptop and turned the screen toward me. "Which brings us to your husband's financial situation."
I leaned in, examining the spreadsheets displayed on the screen. "What am I looking at?"
"This is the corporate audit of Vance Consulting LLC—Julian’s firm," Arthur explained, tapping a key. "For the last five years, Julian has presented himself as a self-made corporate strategist. However, our financial investigators uncovered something quite interesting this morning."
I frowned. "What?"
"Julian’s firm survived its first three years only because your Aunt Eleanor covertly underwrote his business loans through a subsidiary holding company," Arthur revealed. "Furthermore, seventy percent of Julian’s high-paying corporate clients were secured through leases controlled by Vance Tower. His clients leased space in your aunt’s buildings, and in exchange for reduced rent, they directed consulting contracts to your husband."
I gasped softly. "He didn't build that company on his own at all. She was secretly feeding him business."
"Precisely," Arthur said grimly. "Eleanor wanted to give him every opportunity to succeed honestly, hoping he would treat you with the respect and love you deserved. But when he hired Miss Chloe Sterling eight months ago and began funneling corporate funds into private accounts for her personal expenses, he violated the core covenants of those lease-linked contracts."
"What does that mean for his firm now?" I asked.
"It means that as the majority owner of Vance Tower and its parent holding company, you hold the legal right to terminate those commercial leases immediately," Arthur said with a cold, professional smile. "Without Vance Tower backing him, Julian’s firm is essentially bankrupt. In fact, he is currently overleveraged by nearly $1.8 million."
Meanwhile, across town in a cramped, two-star motel room near the freeway, Julian Vance was staring at his phone in horror.
The room smelled of stale coffee and damp carpets. Chloe was sitting on the edge of the unmade bed, her mascara running down her cheeks, furiously packing her designer clothes back into her luggage.
"I can't believe this, Julian!" Chloe yelled, her voice screeching against the thin walls. "I left my apartment because you said we were moving into a million-dollar house! Now I'm sleeping in a roach motel, and my corporate credit card was declined at the front desk!"
"Will you shut up for one second?!" Julian snapped, pacing back and forth in his rumpled suit. "I'm trying to call my chief accountant! There’s been a glitch with the company bank accounts!"
He put the phone to his ear as the call finally connected. "Marcus! Thank God. Why are my business cards getting declined? I need you to transfer fifty thousand from the reserve account right now!"
"Julian..." Marcus’s voice sounded hesitant, almost fearful on the other end of the line. "Where are you?"
"What do you mean where am I?! I'm in a hotel! What's going on with the accounts?!"
"Julian, you need to turn on the financial news," Marcus whispered. "Harrison & Associates served our firm with a formal audit notice two hours ago. Every commercial lease linked to Vance Tower has been canceled. Our major clients—Apex Health, Sterling Logistics, DuPont Capital—they all just pulled their retainers. They said our contracts were contingent on Vance property guarantees."
Julian felt his knees buckle. He reached out, holding onto the cheap wooden desk to keep from collapsing. "What... what are you talking about? My clients love me!"
"They don't care about you, Julian! They cared about cheap rent in Manhattan!" Marcus snapped. "Furthermore, the forensic accountants found the $200,000 you transferred to Chloe Sterling’s personal offshore account last month. They’ve flagged it as corporate embezzlement. Bank of America just froze all company accounts. We’re locked out."
The phone slipped from Julian’s hand, bouncing off the thin carpet.
Chloe stopped packing and looked at him, her eyes wide with cold, calculating realization. "Julian? What did he say?"
Julian slowly raised his head, his face ghostly white. "We're... we're broke, Chloe. Everything is gone."
Chloe stared at him for three long seconds. Then, without saying a word, she zipped up her suitcase, grabbed her purse, and pulled her coat over her shoulders.
"Where are you going?!" Julian demanded, lunging forward to grab her arm.
May you like
Chloe slapped his hand away with vicious force. "Get your hands off me, you pathetic fraud! You lured me in with fake money and a stolen house! You're nothing!"
She slammed the motel door behind her, leaving Julian alone in the dim room, surrounded by the silence of his own ruin.
