Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Grand Ballroom

The silence that followed Valerie’s statement was heavy, almost suffocating. The three hundred elite members of high society who had gathered to drink Miranda Sterling’s expensive wine were now staring at her as if she were a circus act that had gone horribly wrong.

“This is a ridiculous lie!” Miranda shrieked, recovering her tongue through sheer desperation. She turned to face her guests, raising her hands in a frantic gesture. “Don't listen to her! She’s an imposter! A pathological liar! She’s been working in my house for three years for twenty dollars an hour! If she were a Cross, why would she be scrubbing my bathrooms? Answer me that!”

Chloe and Harper quickly nodded behind Miranda, eager to support their social ringleader.

“She’s right!” Chloe shouted. “She’s just an ungrateful servant playing dress-up!”

Valerie didn't flinch. She stood her ground, perfectly composed while Miranda unravelled before the city’s elite.

“I worked in your house, Mrs. Sterling,” Valerie said, her voice steady and controlled, “because three years ago, my grandfather gave me a choice. I could inherit my family’s global enterprise blindly, as so many spoiled heirs do... or I could spend three years at the very bottom, observing how the world really operates.”

Valerie took a step forward, her emerald dress rustling like wind through cedar trees.

“He told me that if you want to know the true character of a person,” Valerie continued, looking directly into Miranda’s terrified eyes, “you don't watch how they treat their peers. You watch how they treat the people who clean their floors, serve their food, and park their cars. For three years, I watched you, Miranda.”

A collective gasp echoed through the room.

“I watched you spit on the floor just to force a seventeen-year-old girl to clean it again,” Valerie said softly, her voice carrying a terrifying weight of truth. “I watched you deduct wages from elderly staff members for breaking a twenty-dollar plate. I watched you treat human beings like disposable garbage while boasting about your charitable donations.”

“Shut up! Shut your mouth!” Miranda screamed, her polished facade completely shattering. She grabbed a champagne flute from a table and pointed it at Valerie like a broken bottle. “Get out of my house! Get out before I have you arrested for trespassing!”

“She isn't trespassing, Mother,” Julian said, his voice cold and resolute.

Julian pulled a crisp, folded parchment document from his inner jacket pocket and unfolded it.

“Julian, what are you doing?!” Miranda gasped, staring at her son in utter disbelief. “Whose side are you on?!”

“I’m on the side of survival, Mom,” Julian said quietly. He turned to the crowd and held up the document. “This is a notice of lease termination and emergency trust audit. This estate—the land it sits on, the mansion itself, and sixty percent of the commercial properties managed by Sterling Real Estate—does not belong to our family.”

The ballroom went dead quiet. You could hear the ice melting in the crystal ice buckets.

“What... what are you talking about?” Miranda whispered, her knees visibly trembling beneath her designer dress. “Your father built this empire!”

“Father didn't build it,” Julian replied, looking at his mother with profound pity and disappointment. “Father was a managing partner under a thirty-year development lease granted by Cross Global Holdings. That lease expired at midnight last night.”

Julian turned to Valerie, inclining his head in a gesture of absolute respect.

“Miss Cross isn't here as a guest, Mother,” Julian announced to the entire room. “She is here as the new principal owner of Sterling Enterprises.”

Miranda’s eyes rolled back slightly, and she stumbled backward. Chloe and Harper scrambled to catch her, but Miranda shoved them away, staring at Valerie as if she were looking at a ghost.

“No...” Miranda whimpered. “No, this isn't real... this is a nightmare...”

“It’s not a nightmare, Mrs. Sterling,” Valerie said, pulling out the gold-embossed invitation Miranda had handed her two days ago. She looked down at it, then dropped it onto the pristine marble floor at Miranda’s feet. “It’s simply black tie.”
