Chapter 5 - The Boardroom ExecutionAt two o'clock that afternoon, the forty-second floor of Ashford Global Headquarters was filled with tense energy.

The twelve members of the Board of Directors sat around the massive mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Richard Sterling, wearing a smug, triumphant smile. On the table before him sat the emergency resolution declaring Caroline Ashford temporarily incapacitated and appointing him Acting CEO.
"Gentlemen," Richard said, tapping his pen against the microphone. "We have waited the full twenty-four hours. Ms. Ashford has failed to contact the executive office. In accordance with Clause 14, I move that we execute the emergency proxy and authorize the immediate, unconditioned eviction and demolition of the Bowmont District."
"Seconded," Arthur Vance called out from across the table.
"All those in favor?" Richard asked, raising his hand.
Ten hands rose slowly into the air.
"The motion is—"
BOOM.
The double oak doors of the boardroom were thrown open with such violent force that they slammed against the marble walls, echoing like a cannon shot through the high-ceilinged room!
The directors gasped, turning frantically in their leather chairs.
Caroline Ashford walked into the boardroom.
She wore a striking black power suit, her eyes burning with an intense, terrifying brilliance. Walking behind her were two senior agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and three uniformed officers from the City Fraud Division.
Richard Sterling froze, his hand dropping from the air, his face turning the color of ash. "C-Caroline... you're alive."
"To your great disappointment, Richard," Caroline said, walking smoothly down the center of the room. She didn't sit down. She stood at the end of the long table, resting her palms against the dark wood, looking at every single director who had raised their hand.
"I spent the last seventy-two hours in Bowmont," Caroline announced, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "I walked among the people you described as 'blight' and 'disposable.' I slept in their buildings. I ate their food."
She looked straight at Richard Sterling.
"And while I was doing that," Caroline continued, "my forensic accounting team was reviewing the offshore accounts registered to Sterling Development LLC—the shell company you secretly created to siphon thirty million dollars out of the Bowmont relocation budget."
A collective gasp exploded across the room!
Richard scrambled to his feet, his chair rolling back against the wall. "That's a lie! She's hysterical! She's been missing for three days, she doesn't know what she's talking about!"
The lead SEC agent stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of federal arrest warrants from his coat.
"Richard Sterling," the agent read loudly, "you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and falsifying corporate governance documents."
The uniformed officers stepped up behind Richard, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
"Caroline! Please!" Richard shouted, his face contorted in panic as he was dragged toward the door. "I did it for the company! We needed that land cleared! You can't do this to me!"
"Take him away," Caroline said coldly, not even looking at him as he was escorted from the room.
The boardroom fell into dead, suffocating silence. The remaining eleven directors sat stiffly in their chairs, terrified to make a sound, staring at the woman standing at the head of the table.

Caroline picked up the emergency resolution document Richard had prepared. She tore it smoothly in half, then tore it again, dropping the pieces into the wastebasket beside her chair.
"Now," Caroline said, looking around the table with eyes like ice. "Let us discuss the new Bowmont Redevelopment Plan."
