Chapter 3 - The Shadow Alliance

The rain was coming down in sheets outside my lawyer’s high-rise office in downtown Chicago.

I sat at the massive glass conference table, a cup of hot tea between my hands. Across from me sat Denise Porter, my lead attorney, and Marcus Vance, the senior investigator from Apex Forensic Group who had spent the last twelve months helping me compile the evidence against Richard.

"It was a complete sweep, Eleanor," Denise said, sliding a thick blue folder across the table. "The federal marshals seized his office, his personal vehicles, and the Cascade penthouse. Because you signed the divorce decree before the federal seizure was finalized, and because we structured the settlement to designate your portion of the assets as a pre-existing personal debt repayment, your personal funds are entirely protected."

"What about Maya's trust?" I asked, my heart tightening at the thought of my daughter.

"We recovered every single dollar," Marcus Vance said, a rare, warm smile breaking across his stern face. "We tracked the $500,000 Richard withdrew from her educational trust to the purchase of Chloe’s luxury high-rise unit. Because that transaction was made using stolen trust funds, the court has placed a constructive trust on the property. It’s being sold next week, and the proceeds are going directly back into Maya’s college account under your sole trusteeship."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension that had held my shoulders stiff for two decades finally melting away. "Thank you, Marcus. Thank you, Denise."

"Don't thank us yet, Eleanor," Denise said, her face turning serious. "Richard is desperate. His family’s name is ruined, his assets are gone, and he's facing ten to fifteen years in federal prison. But his mother, Beatatrice, still has connections. She has reached out to some... unsavory elements in the city. The Valenti family."

I paused, my tea halfway to my lips. "The Valentis? The ones associated with the shipping ports?"

"Yes," Marcus intervened. "They used Richard’s venture capital firm to launder some of their offshore shipping revenue. Now that Richard’s accounts are frozen, the Valentis have lost over eight million dollars in transit. They are looking for someone to blame. And Beatatrice is trying to convince them that you have the key to the encrypted backup servers."

"Do I?" I asked.

May you like

Marcus smiled, his eyes flashing. "You wrote the system, Eleanor. Of course you have the key. But they don't know that we've already secured the physical servers at an undisclosed location. The Valentis are dangerous, but they are also businessmen. If they realize Richard is a liability and you are the only one who can help them recover their legitimate cargo routes without attracting the FBI, they will turn on him in a heartbeat."

"Then we make a deal," I said, setting my teacup down with a sharp click. "I don't play the victim, Marcus. I didn't spend twenty years surviving Richard’s emotional abuse to run away now."
