Part 5: The Island of Shadows

The island in Maine was a jagged piece of rock covered in gray mist and ancient pine trees. The house there was a sprawling estate built of stone and glass, overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean. It was peaceful, but it felt like the edge of the world.

Two months passed in relative isolation. My daily life revolved entirely around Adriana. She was crawling now, her laughter filling the lonely halls of the stone house. She had become my whole world. The grief of losing my twins hadn't vanished, but it had been reshaped into a fierce, protective love for this little girl who had saved me from my own despair.

Dominic called every night through an encrypted satellite phone. The calls were short, sometimes only lasting thirty seconds.

"We took their docks in New Jersey today," he would say, his voice tight. "Are you eating? Is Adriana sleeping?"

"We're fine, Dominic. Just come home," I would reply.

But as the third month began, the calls stopped.

One day passed. Then three. Then a week.

Santos, who had been assigned as our primary guardian on the island, grew increasingly tense. He spent all his time on the radio, his face growing grayer with each passing hour.

On the tenth night of silence, a massive storm hit the coast. The wind howled like a dying animal, slamming waves against the cliffs below the estate. Around midnight, the power went out, plunging the house into pitch blackness.

I stood by the nursery window, holding Adriana close, my eyes straining against the dark sea. Suddenly, I saw it—a flash of light out on the water. A boat was approaching the private dock, navigating the deadly rocks without any running lights.

Santos burst into the room, his face pale under his night-vision goggles. "Emily, we have a problem. Two unrecognized vessels just landed at the cove. My comms are completely jammed. We are cut off."

"Is it Volkov?" I whispered, panic seizing my throat.

"I don't know," Santos said, checking his sidearm. "But whoever it is, they didn't bring a white flag. Follow me to the cliffside tunnel. Now."
