Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Velvet Curtain

Silence slammed down upon the lobby like a physical blow.
Michael stared at Daniel, his mind struggling to process the words. "Wait... what did you say? Cancel the lease? You can't do that! That's the Vance Heritage gala! We paid a two-hundred-thousand-dollar deposit!"
Victoria rushed forward, her composure completely shattering, her voice rising in pitch. "Daniel! You can't do this! The board of directors is upstairs! The investors from Chicago just arrived! You're going to humiliate the entire company over a misunderstanding!"
Daniel slowly turned his head to look at Victoria. His silver-gray eyes held a coldness so absolute it made her take a step back.
"The company bears my name, Victoria," Daniel said flatly. "You are a distant cousin holding two percent non-voting stock because our grandfather took pity on your father's failed real estate firm. You do not speak for the board, and you certainly do not bring disgraced middle-managers into our private sanctuaries."
Michael’s jaw dropped. He looked from Daniel to Victoria, his eyes widening in pure horror as the realization finally began to pierce through his thick skull.
"Vance...?" Michael whispered, his gaze drifting slowly back to me. "Clara... he called you... his sister?"
For seven years, Michael had known me as Clara Thorne—a quiet, grounded elementary school art teacher whose parents had passed away when she was young. I had never hidden my brothers from him, but I had never flaunted them either. My brothers—Arthur, Julian, Daniel, and Gabriel—had agreed when I married Michael that I wanted a simple, honest life away from the cutthroat corporate politics of Vance Heritage Holdings. Michael had met Daniel twice at small, private family dinners, but Daniel had used his maternal middle name during those brief introductions, and Michael had been too absorbed in his own career to ever ask questions.
Michael had assumed my family was ordinary. He had assumed I was powerless.
"She is Clara Vance," Daniel stated, his voice echoing across the high ceilings of the marble atrium. "The primary trustee of Vance Heritage, owner of forty percent of the parent corporation, and the woman whose signature authorizes every single commercial credit line your firm relies on to stay solvent."
Jessica’s knees literally buckled. She reached out, grabbing the elevator handrail to keep from falling onto the floor. Her face was drained of every drop of color, her eyes fixed on me in sheer, paralyzing horror.
"Clara..." Michael stammered, stepping toward me with his hands raised, his eyes desperate, frantic, and bloodshot. "Clara, baby, listen to me... I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know! Victoria told me you were just... she told me you didn't understand the business world! She told me—"
"You didn't know who I was, Michael," I interrupted softly, my voice calm, flat, and devoid of the tears he was expecting. "But you knew who you were. You were a husband who promised to come home. You were a father whose nine-month-old daughter sat in a freezing car for an hour just to hand you a cardboard house."
I looked down at Jessica, who was trembling violently against the elevator wall.
"And you let your secretary tell my child that his 'real family' was upstairs," I added.
"No! No, Clara, please!" Michael begged, turning furiously on Jessica. "Jessica, you're fired! Get out! Get your stuff and get out of this building right now!"
Jessica gasped, looking at Michael in utter betrayal. "Michael! You told me last night that she was a drag on your career! You told me—"
"SHUT UP!" Michael screamed, his hands shaking as he reached for my sleeve. "Clara, please... think of Emma! We're a family! I made a mistake, I was stressed, the pressure of the promotion—"
Daniel stepped between us. His massive frame blocked Michael completely from my sight.
"General Manager Miller," Daniel said coldly.
"Sir?"
"Escort Mr. Sterling, Miss Vance, and their associates off the property immediately," Daniel ordered. "If any of them set foot on a Vance Heritage site again, call federal security."
"Right away, Mr. Vance!" Miller motioned to six heavy security guards who immediately moved in, surrounding Michael, Victoria, and the shell-shocked executives.
"Clara! CLARA!" Michael yelled as the guards grabbed his arms, dragging him back toward the spinning glass doors into the driving snowstorm outside. "CLARA, PLEASE! DON'T DO THIS TO ME! I LOVE YOU!"
I didn't watch him go.
I picked up the flattened blue cardboard house from the marble floor. I picked up the small, torn silver star that lay near the edge of the rug. I held them gently in my hands, brushing away the dust from Jessica's shoe.

Daniel placed his broad, warm hand on the small of my back.
"Come upstairs, Clara," Daniel said softly, his voice returning to the gentle warmth he reserved only for his family. "Gabriel and Julian are waiting in the penthouse. It’s time to take back what’s yours."
