Chapter 3 - The Breath of Life

Two hours later, the red "In Surgery" light above OR 3 finally flickered off.
Caleb scrambled to his feet as Dr. Morgan walked out. The doctor had pulled down his mask, his face lined with deep exhaustion, but there was a flicker of something close to relief in his eyes.
"How are they?" Caleb choked out, gripping the back of a chair to keep his knees from buckling.
"Your wife is out of surgery," Dr. Morgan said. "The placental abruption was severe, and she lost a massive amount of blood. We had to perform an emergency Caesarean section and a blood transfusion. She is currently in the ICU, heavily sedated, but she is stable. She is a very strong woman, Caleb."
"And... and the baby?"
Dr. Morgan’s expression softened, but his voice remained cautious. "You have a daughter, Caleb. She was born at thirty-two weeks, which is premature, and because of the abruption, she was deprived of oxygen for several critical minutes. We had to resuscitate her in the OR. She is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on a ventilator."
"Is she... is she going to make it?"
"The next forty-eight hours are critical," Dr. Morgan said gently. "But she is fighting. Come. Let's go see your daughter first, and then I will take you to your wife."
The NICU was a quiet, dimly lit room filled with the rhythmic humming and beeping of advanced medical machinery. Caleb was guided to an incubator in the far corner. Inside, surrounded by wires, tubes, and a tiny oxygen mask, lay his daughter.
She was so incredibly small. Her skin was a delicate, translucent pink, and her tiny chest rose and fell with the mechanical breath of the ventilator.
Caleb pressed his hand against the glass of the incubator. A tear slipped down his cheek, splashing onto his blood-stained shirt.
"I'm sorry," he whispered to the glass. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there to protect you. But I'm here now. I will never leave you."
He spent an hour beside her, watching her tiny fingers twitch, before a nurse came to guide him to the ICU where Hannah was recovering.
The ICU room was quiet. Hannah lay in the center of the bed, her face pale, several IV lines running into her arms. She looked fragile, but when Caleb walked in, her eyelids fluttered open.
"Caleb..." she whispered, her voice barely audible.
He rushed to her side, gently taking her hand. Her fingers were cold, but she squeezed his hand with a surprising, desperate strength.
"I'm here, Hannah. I'm here. I'm so sorry. I know everything now. I know what she did."
Tears spilled from the corners of Hannah's eyes. "Our baby... is she..."
"She's alive," Caleb said, his voice thick with emotion. "She's in the NICU. She's a fighter, Hannah. Just like her mom. She's fighting so hard."
Hannah let out a ragged breath, her shoulders relaxing. "Your mother... she took my phone, Caleb. She locked me in. I was screaming for help, and she just... she stood there on the porch, smiling at me through the window."
"She will never touch us again," Caleb said, leaning down to press his forehead against hers. "I've cut her out of our lives completely. I'm going to the police, Hannah. She is going to pay for what she did to you. I swear it."
"I was so scared you wouldn't believe me," Hannah whispered, her eyes searching his face. "When you looked at that jacket..."
"I was a fool," Caleb said, his heart breaking with a profound, consuming guilt. "I let her poison my mind for years. But that ends today. From this moment on, it is you and me. I will spend the rest of my life earning back your trust."

Hannah looked at him, and through the pain and the exhaustion, a faint, beautiful spark of the woman he loved returned to her eyes.
"We are a family, Caleb," she said softly. "We fight together."
