Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

By 10:00 AM the following morning, the illusion of control my mother held began to shatter in public.

Evelyn Sterling had stepped into L'Étoile, an ultra-exclusive boutique on Fifth Avenue where she frequently spent tens of thousands of dollars on couture dresses to maintain her status among New York’s high-society matriarchs. She spent two hours picking out velvet gowns and diamond-encrusted brooches, surrounded by flattering sales associates.

When she produced her primary black American Express card—a card tied directly to my corporate executive pool—the line failed.

"I'm so sorry, Mrs. Sterling," the boutique manager said politely after attempting the transaction three times. "The card is coming back as 'Account Revoked by Primary Policyholder'."

Evelyn snapped her purse shut, her face flushing crimson. "Nonsense. Try it again. My son is Daniel Sterling."

"We did, ma'am. We also attempted your backup Platinum card. It has been deactivated."

Across town, Lucas walked into a luxury dealership to collect a custom European sports car he had ordered using a $150,000 wire transfer from "Northbridge Interiors." As he reached for the keys, two private security officers accompanied by a local deputy stepped forward.

"Lucas Sterling?" the deputy asked.

"Yeah? What's going on?" Lucas sneered, adjusting his designer jacket. "Do you know who I am?"

"We have a court-ordered freeze notice on this vehicle's acquisition funds due to suspected fraudulent wire transfers initiated from a revoked corporate account," the deputy replied calmly. "The keys remain with the dealership. And you need to step away from the counter."

My phone began ringing at 11:30 AM.

I sat beside Elena’s bed in the private medical suite, peeling an apple for her while she read a book. The phone vibrated against the wooden nightstand. The screen read: MOTHER.

I let it ring until it went to voicemail. Ten seconds later, another call came in from LUCAS. I declined it immediately and blocked both numbers on my primary device, routing all their communications straight to Marcus Sterling's legal server.

By 2:00 PM, unable to reach me, Evelyn resorted to sending a frantic email to my corporate address, dropping the grand matriarch persona entirely.

FROM: Evelyn Sterling

TO: Daniel Sterling

SUBJECT: Unacceptable Behavior

Daniel, what is the meaning of this childish retaliation? My credit cards do not work. Lucas was humiliated at the auto group. The staff at the house say the pantry orders have been canceled. How dare you cut off your mother over a minor domestic misunderstanding? Elena was being disrespectful and needed to learn her place in this family. You are letting that woman destroy our bloodline. Call me immediately and restore the accounts before I take this to the board of directors.

I read the email twice. I didn't feel anger; I felt an overwhelming, icy clarity.

"What is it?" Elena asked softly, setting her book down. She looked healthier today, the color slowly returning to her cheeks, though she still flinched at sudden sounds.

"Nothing for you to worry about," I said, sliding the laptop away. "Just a woman discovering that the world doesn't belong to her."

"Daniel..." Elena reached out, clutching my hand. Her dark eyes were filled with lingering fear. "Your mother has known those board members since your father died. She's been telling them for months that I'm spending your money and driving you away from the family business. If she turns them against you—"

"The board members are investors, Elena," I interrupted gently, leaning over to kiss her forehead. "Investors care about balance sheets, returns, and legality. They don't care about my mother's tea parties. Rest now. Tonight, I end this."
