Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Alliance

The trial that followed over the next three months was the most publicized legal battle in modern Mexican corporate history.
The media dubbed it “The Inheritance of Reforma.” Day after day, newspapers and television networks broadcasted the sordid details of how Senator Humberto Navarro, corporate titan Jorge Mendoza, and my estranged wife Karina had systematically conspired to defraud an ailing bedridden woman of her rightful property, fabricate legal documents, and siphon millions of dollars through offshore tax havens.
Senator Navarro was forced to resign his seat in Congress after federal investigators uncovered direct wire transfers from Mendoza’s shell companies into his campaign accounts. Stripped of his political immunity, he was booked into the same federal detention facility where Jorge Mendoza awaited trial.
Karina’s defense crumbled on the second day of hearings when our forensic data analyst presented the digital audit trail of her phone and laptop. Not only did the files prove she had intentionally withheld my mother’s critical medications, but they also contained recorded voice notes where she openly mocked my mother’s physical condition and discussed plans to institutionalize her permanently once the Coyoacán land sale was finalized.
Sitting in the courtroom gallery, listening to the audio playback of my wife calling my mother a “useless burden,” I felt no anger left. Only a profound, cleansing emptiness.
When the judge finally handed down the verdict—twenty-two years for Jorge Mendoza, fourteen years for Senator Navarro, and nine years for Karina for elder abuse, forgery, and conspiracy—there were no cheers in the courtroom. Just the heavy, solemn weight of justice being served.
Karina looked back at me once as the bailiffs led her away in handcuffs, her eyes wide with a desperate, pleading terror that she had never shown before.

I didn’t look away. I looked at her with absolute, detached indifference—the same indifference she had shown my mother while forcing her to wash her feet on a freezing marble floor.
She was no longer a part of my world.
