Chapter 2 - The Crash in MiamiMidnight at the RitzThe ocean breeze carried the faint hum of bass music across the private balcony of Suite 804 at the Ritz-Carlton in South Beach. Sunlight was hours away, but the Miami night sky was brilliant with multi-colored flashes of light from beachside parties.

Inside the oceanfront penthouse, the celebration was in full swing.

Evelyn Vance reclined on a white leather sofa, holding a crystal glass overflowing with vintage champagne. She was wearing a sparkling emerald-green dress—a $4,000 purchase made earlier that afternoon at an upscale boutique in Bal Harbour, charged directly to David’s primary Amex account.

"To family!" Mark raised his glass high, laughing loudly. He was wearing an $18,000 gold Rolex Submariner, another "emergency item" he had purchased at the airport under the guise of an investment.

"To family," Chloe toasted, clinking her glass against his. She adjusted her diamond earrings and kicked off her heels onto the plush rug. "God, it feels good to be out of New York. I couldn't stand another second in that freezing apartment listening to Maya groan every time she tried to get out of bed."

"She is so dramatic," Evelyn scoffed, taking a long sip of champagne. "A C-section is a routine procedure! I had two children naturally and was back on my feet the next day. She’s just using it as an excuse to make David feel sorry for her. But David knows who really matters. Blood is thicker than water."

Ethan—Mark’s younger brother—was lounging at the marble dining table with his wife and two friends, eating from a massive platter of fresh stone crabs and imported caviar that had been delivered by room service.

"Are you sure David won't notice the charges on the card, Evelyn?" Ethan’s wife asked, wiping her hands on a linen napkin. "It’s almost ten grand just for tonight’s food and drinks."

Evelyn waved her hand dismissively, her diamond rings catching the ambient light. "David is in Stuttgart inspecting a massive automotive factory. He works eighteen hours a day. He doesn't check his personal bank statements while he’s on high-level business trips. Besides, even if he sees it, I’ll just tell him Maya asked us to buy supplies for the house. He never questions me."

"Did you check your phone, Chloe?" Mark asked, turning to his wife. "Has he texted back from Germany?"

"No," Chloe shrugged, swirling her wine. "I sent him a text wishing him a Happy New Year three hours ago, but he probably turned his phone off. He’ll call tomorrow morning, and we’ll tell him everything is fine back home."

Suddenly, the electronic lock on the front door emitted a sharp, loud beep.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.

The thick oak door swung open with heavy force, slamming against the interior wall.

"What on earth?!" Evelyn shrieked, jumping up from the sofa and spilling her champagne across the white carpet. "Who gave the hotel staff permission to barge in here like this?! I am going to report—"

She froze, her voice dying in her throat.

Four uniformed Miami-Dade police officers stepped into the suite, followed by two plainclothes detectives with gold badges clipped to their belts. Behind them stood the hotel manager, his face pale and nervous.

"Evelyn Vance? Chloe Vance? Mark Sterling?" the lead detective asked, holding a stack of papers in his gloved hand.

"Yes... that's us," Evelyn stammered, trying to regain her regal composure, though her voice shook slightly. "What is the meaning of this intrusion? Do you have any idea who we are? We are VIP guests in this hotel!"

"I don't care if you're the Queen of England, ma'am," the detective replied coldly. "I am Detective Ramirez with the Miami-Dade Police Department, executing an emergency extraditable felony warrant issued by the State of New York."

Chloe dropped her wine glass. It shattered against the tile floor, spraying red liquid across her designer heels. "W-Warrant?! What are you talking about? There’s been a mistake!"

"There’s no mistake," Ramirez said, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "The charges include First-Degree Grand Larceny, Criminal Contempt, Identity Theft, Fraudulent Use of Credit Facilities, Theft of Controlled Substances, and Felony Child Endangerment."

"WHAT?!" Evelyn shrieked, her face twisting into a mask of pure rage and terror. "Child endangerment?! That’s my grandson! This is insane! This is that little lying witch Maya! She called you, didn't she?! She’s trying to frame us because she’s jealous of our family!"

"Ma'am, step away from the couch and put your hands behind your back," an officer commanded, advancing on her.

"Don't touch me!" Evelyn screamed, backing away toward the glass balcony. "Mark! Call David! Call my son right now! Tell him police are attacking his mother! David will have all of your badges!"

"Mr. David Vance is currently at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan," Detective Ramirez stated clearly, his voice echoing in the sudden silence of the room. "He is the primary complainant who signed the criminal affidavits three hours ago. He also provided the NYPD with four hundred gigabytes of high-definition internal video footage recorded inside his apartment over the last forty-eight hours."

The room seemed to lose all oxygen.

Chloe gasped, staggering backward until her back hit the wall. Her face drained of all color. "V-Video? What video? There are no cameras in the apartment! I taped over the doorbell!"

"You taped over the front entrance camera, Ms. Vance," Ramirez said with a cold, mocking smile. "You missed the four interior motion-activated 4K cameras. The District Attorney in Manhattan has already reviewed the footage of you stealing prescription medication, taking formula from a newborn, disabling the home heating system, and stealing two thousand dollars in cash meant for a medical nurse."

"No..." Evelyn whimpered, her arrogant facade crumbling into raw, hysterical panic. "No, no, no! David wouldn't do this! I'm his mother! He loves me!"

"Hands behind your back, ma'am!" the officer barked, grabbing Evelyn’s arm and pulling it firmly behind her waist.

CLICK-CLACK.

The cold metal clamped tightly around Evelyn’s wrists.

"Ouch! You're hurting me! Mark! Do something!" Evelyn sobbed, her eyes wide with unadulterated fear.

Mark tried to bolt toward the bedroom door, but two officers tackled him to the floor, pinning him against the hard tile. Within seconds, his arms were forced behind his back, and the cuffs snapped into place.

"I didn't do anything!" Mark yelled, his face pressed flat against the floor, his $18,000 watch scraping against the stone. "It was Evelyn’s idea! She told me David gave us permission to use the card! I'm just the son-in-law!"

"You spineless coward!" Chloe screamed at her husband as a female officer grabbed her wrists, snapping handcuffs onto her as well. "Don't you dare blame my mother!"

"Shut up, both of you!" Mark spat back, tears of anger rolling down his cheek. "I’m not going to prison for your psycho family!"

Ethan and his wife shrank into the corner of the room, holding their hands above their heads in absolute terror, trying to distance themselves from the chaotic arrests.

"Detective," the hotel manager stepped forward nervously. "What about the bill for the suite and room service? It totals over twenty-four thousand dollars."

"Mr. Vance revoked all authorized card privileges four hours ago," Ramirez replied. "Any unpaid balance incurred after that time will be added to the criminal fraud indictment against the defendants."

"You can't do this!" Evelyn shrieked as she was dragged toward the front door, her hair disheveled, her makeup running down her face in messy black streaks. "David! DAVID! FORGIVE ME! I'M YOUR MOTHER!"

Her screams echoed down the quiet, carpeted hallway of the Ritz-Carlton as hotel guests peeked out of their rooms, filming the humiliation on their smartphones. Evelyn Vance, who had spent her entire life obsessing over social status and pretending to be a refined Manhattan matriarch, was paraded through the lobby in chains, shoved into the back of a dark police cruiser, and driven away into the Miami night.
