Chapter 2 - Midnight in South BeachChampagne and HandcuffsThe penthouse suite on the eighth floor of the Ritz-Carlton in South Beach smelled of expensive lavender oil, ocean breeze, and spilled alcohol. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass balconies, the Miami skyline was illuminated by flashes of neon, and the distant thrum of bass from beachside parties echoed across the water.

Inside the suite, Evelyn Vance was reclining on a cream-colored velvet sofa, sipping Dom Pérignon from a crystal flute. She was wearing a sparkling emerald green evening gown that she had purchased earlier that afternoon at a boutique on Bal Harbour—charged, of course, to David’s secondary corporate card.
"To family!" Mark toasted, raising his glass high. He was wearing a brand-new Rolex Submariner—another "emergency purchase" cleared through David's line of credit under the guise of an "investment asset."
"To family," Chloe cheered, clinking her glass against her husband’s. She adjusted her diamond earrings. "God, it feels good to breathe warm air. I couldn't stand another second in that depressing apartment listening to Maya groan about her incision."
"She’s so theatrical," Evelyn scoffed, tossing her head back with a sharp laugh. "A C-section isn't open-heart surgery! I had two children naturally without a single complaint. She’s just trying to turn David against us so he doesn't give us our monthly allowance. But David knows who really matters. Blood is thicker than water."
Ethan, Mark’s younger brother, was sitting at the dining table with his girlfriend, laughing as he posted photos on Instagram with the caption: #Blessed #NewYearVibes #LuxuryLiving.
"Did you double-check if David called?" Chloe asked, a tiny flicker of anxiety touching her chest. "He hasn't answered my text wishing him a Happy New Year from Germany."
"Oh, please," Evelyn dismissed with a wave of her jewel-encrusted hand. "He’s in a factory surrounded by noisy machinery in Stuttgart. The time difference is six hours ahead; he’s probably already asleep in his hotel. He won't check the bank alerts until Monday at the earliest. And by then, we'll be back in New York, we'll put five hundred dollars of groceries back in their fridge, and tell him Maya spent all the money on designer baby clothes."
Mark snorted into his champagne. "Brilliant, Mom. Absolutely brilliant."
Suddenly, the electronic lock on the suite's heavy oak front door beeped loudly.
Red light. Green light. Click.
The door didn't just open—it slammed backward against the wall with a deafening crash that made Evelyn jump, spilling champagne all over her emerald gown.
"What on earth?!" Evelyn shrieked, standing up furiously. "Who gave the hotel staff permission to—"
She froze.
Four uniformed Miami-Dade Police officers stepped into the foyer, followed by two plainclothes detectives wearing gold badges clipped to their belts. Behind them stood the hotel’s night manager, looking pale and nervous.
"Evelyn Vance? Chloe Vance? Mark Sterling?" the lead detective asked, pulling a thick stack of folded papers from his jacket.
"Yes, that's us!" Evelyn demanded, putting her hands on her hips, her voice dripping with entitlement. "How dare you burst into our private suite like this! Do you have any idea how much this room costs per night? We are high-profile guests! I want your badge numbers immediately!"
The lead detective didn't flinch. "I am Detective Ramirez, Miami-Dade Police Department, acting on behalf of the New York City Police Department and the Special Victims Unit."
Chloe’s face instantly drained of color. She dropped her champagne glass. It shattered against the Italian marble tile, spraying sparkling wine over her silver heels. "N-NYPD? What are you talking about? There's been a mistake!"
"There is no mistake," Detective Ramirez said coldly. "We have outstanding felony arrest warrants issued by the State of New York for all three of you."
"Warrants?!" Mark yelled, stepping forward aggressively. "For what?! I haven't done anything wrong! My brother-in-law owns this account! He’s a millionaire engineer!"
"The charges," Detective Ramirez read from the paper, his voice echoing sharply in the luxurious room, "include Grand Larceny in the First Degree, Identity Theft, Fraudulent Use of a Credit Facility, Deprivation of Medical Care to a Dependent Person, and Criminal Endangerment of an Infant Child."
"WHAT?!" Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek. "Infant child?! That’s my grandson! This is a family matter! This is that manipulative little witch Maya, isn't it?! She’s lying! She’s trying to frame us because she’s jealous of our lifestyle!"
"Ma'am, keep your hands where I can see them," an officer commanded, unclipping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Don't touch me!" Evelyn backed away toward the balcony glass, her hands trembling violently. "Call David! Call my son right now! David, tell these thugs to get out of my room! David will fire all of you!"
"Mr. David Vance is currently at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan," Detective Ramirez said with a cold, precise edge. "He is the primary complainant who filed these charges two hours ago. He also provided four hundred gigabytes of high-definition video evidence recorded inside his apartment over the last seven days."
Silence slammed into the room like a physical blow.
Chloe gasped, grabbing Mark’s arm so hard her fingernails bit into his suit jacket. "V-Video? What video? There are no cameras in the apartment! I taped over the doorbell!"
"You missed the six hidden interior security feeds, Ms. Vance," the detective replied grimly. "The NYPD has already reviewed the footage of you packing up the victim's prescription medical supplies, leaving a surgical patient bleeding on the floor, disabling the apartment heating, and explicitly discussing stealing two thousand dollars in cash meant for a post-natal nurse."
Evelyn felt the world tilt beneath her feet. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. The cameras. He watched us. He saw everything.
"No..." Evelyn whimpered, her arrogant composure crumbling into raw, ugly panic. "No, no, no! David wouldn't do this to his own mother! I raised him! I gave him everything!"
"Hands behind your back, ma'am," the officer ordered, grabbing Evelyn’s arm and forcing her hands behind her back.
CLICK-CLACK.
The cold steel clamped tightly around Evelyn’s wrists.
"Ouch! You're hurting me! Mark, do something!" Evelyn sobbed, her face twisting in terror.
Mark tried to pull away, but two officers tackled him to the floor, forcing his face against the cold marble tile. Within seconds, his arms were pinned behind his back and cuffed. "I didn't do anything! It was Evelyn’s idea! She told me David gave permission to use the card!"
"You spineless coward!" Chloe screamed at her husband, as another female officer grabbed her arms and snapped handcuffs onto her wrists. "Don't you dare pin this on my mother!"
"Shut up, both of you!" Mark yelled from the floor, his cheek pressed flat against the ground, his expensive Rolex scraping against the marble. "I'm not going to prison for your twisted family drama!"
Ethan and his girlfriend shrank back against the wall, holding their hands high in the air, terrified they would be dragged into the net.
"You two aren't named on the primary warrant," Detective Ramirez told Ethan, "but this room is now an active crime scene. All luggage, luxury goods, receipts, jewelry, and electronics purchased within the last 72 hours are being seized as evidence of grand larceny."
"My purse!" Evelyn shrieked as an officer bagged her $5,000 Chanel bag along with the cash and David's credit cards. "My mink coat! You can't take that! David bought that for me!"
"David Vance cancelled all authorized user permissions on these accounts at 11:30 PM," the detective said calmly. "Every purchase made on these cards after that time constitutes an additional count of fraudulent theft."
The police began march the three suspects out of the penthouse suite and into the long hallway.
Outside in the corridor, hotel guests were peeking out of their rooms, holding up their smartphones, recording the pathetic spectacle. Evelyn Vance—who had spent her whole life obsessed with her social standing and pretending to be a wealthy Manhattan matriarch—was now being paraded down a luxury hotel hallway in handcuffs, her makeup smeared with tears, her hair disheveled, weeping hysterically.

"David!" she screamed into the empty air as they pushed her into the elevator. "David, please! I'm your mother! Forgive me! DAVID!"
The elevator doors slid shut, sealing her screams inside as the city outside erupted into massive displays of midnight fireworks, welcoming the New Year with a roar.
