Chapter 5 - Fire and RetributionThe room exploded into chaos.

Detective Grant was the first to react, reaching for his sidearm at his hip. I didn't waste a bullet on his arms or legs. I fired a single round into his shoulder, the force of the high-velocity impact spinning him around and slamming him hard into the glass conference table, which shattered into thousands of sharp fragments.
Grant screamed, clutching his shattered shoulder as his gun clattered across the marble floor.
"DON'T MOVE!" I roared, my voice echoing through the massive penthouse suite like thunder.
Richard Montgomery froze behind his executive desk, his hands raised in terror. He was a silver-haired man in a three-thousand-dollar suit, now sweating profusely, his face drained of all color.
Marcus Vance stood near the side wall, looking at me with eyes full of horror, shame, and guilt. He wasn't reaching for a weapon. He just stood there, paralyzed as he looked at my face.
"Mason..." Marcus choked out, his voice trembling. "Mason, I swear to God... I didn't know. I didn't know about Violet. They told me..."
"Shut up, Marcus," I said, my rifle pinned directly on Richard Montgomery’s forehead. "You sold your soul to a coward for a paycheck. You let him use your family security code. You are just as responsible for what happened to my daughter as the man who swung the flashlight."
Marcus closed his eyes, tears slipping down his rugged face. He dropped his weapon onto the floor and slowly sank to his knees, placing his hands behind his head. "Do what you have to do, brother. I won't stop you."
I didn't shoot Marcus. Death was too easy for a traitor. He would live with his disgrace behind iron bars for the rest of his life.
I walked slowly across the shattered glass toward Richard Montgomery.
"Please... please, Miller," Montgomery stammered, backing away until his spine hit the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the city. "We can make a deal! Millions! I have offshore accounts! I can give you ten million dollars! You can take your daughter anywhere in the world! Best doctors, best treatment—"
"My daughter doesn't need your blood money, Montgomery," I said, stepping within two feet of him. "She needs justice."
I reached out, grabbed him by his silk tie, and hauled him over his desk, slamming his face directly into the surface where my stolen encrypted hard drive sat plugged into a laptop.
"Is this what you almost killed my daughter for?" I whispered, pulling the hard drive out and slipping it into my tactical pouch. "A few lines of financial code? A few million dollars stolen from public contracts?"
"You can't prove anything!" Montgomery gasped, blood running from his broken nose onto his white shirt. "Grant will take the fall! My lawyers will tear your story apart! You breached my private building! You assaulted police officers! You’re going to spend the rest of your life in a supermax facility!"
I smiled. It wasn't a warm smile. It was the smile of a soldier who had already planned five moves ahead.
I reached down to my vest and unclipped a small black recording device connected directly to Ghost’s satellite uplink.
"Ghost," I said into the mic. "Did you get all of that?"
"Every single word, Mason," Ghost’s voice echoed through the room's speakers, having hijacked the penthouse audio system. "Audio and high-definition video feed of Detective Grant confessing to the assault on Violet, Montgomery admitting to ordering the heist, and the full financial decryption of their offshore money laundering ring. It’s already been broadcast directly to the Regional FBI Field Office, the State Police Internal Affairs Division, and every major news outlet in the state."
Montgomery’s eyes widened in sheer, catastrophic horror. He looked at the glowing laptop screen, where red progress bars showed the file transmissions reaching federal servers in real-time.
"It's over, Montgomery," I said softly.
Outside the window, red and blue lights began to flash against the rain-slicked glass. Dozens of police cruisers—not local precinct units, but State Police vehicles and black FBI SUVs—were pulling up to the entrance of the Montgomery Tower below.
Sirens wailed in the distance, a deafening chorus of justice sweeping through the city.
Detective Grant groaned on the floor, bleeding onto the glass, realizing that his career, his freedom, and his life were ruined forever.
I lowered my rifle, engaged the safety, and set it on the desk.
I looked down at Montgomery, who had collapsed onto his knees, sobbing as he realized his empire had crumbled in a single night.
"The police are coming up, Montgomery," I said, turning my back on him. "And for your sake... you better hope they get to you before the federal prosecutors do."
I walked past Marcus Vance, who remained on his knees, head bowed in utter humiliation.
I pushed open the shattered mahogany doors, stepping into the corridor as the elevator chimed, revealing a team of Federal Bureau of Investigation tactical agents entering with weapons drawn.
"FBI! Hands in the air!" the lead agent yelled.

I slowly raised my hands, looking the lead agent dead in the eye.
"The suspects are inside," I said calmly. "The evidence is already on your Director's desk. My name is Mason Miller. My daughter is in the Intensive Care Unit at Oak Ridge Memorial. And my job here is done."
