CHAPTER 2: THE HOSPITAL LIGHTS
The ER lights were too bright for how quiet everything suddenly became.
Ethan held Owen while Hannah was rushed inside on a wheelchair, barely able to stay conscious.
A nurse took one look at Hannah’s wrists and changed her expression immediately.
Then she looked at the baby.
And everything shifted.
“Doctor. Now.”
Minutes later, a pediatric doctor examined Owen carefully.
“He’s dehydrated,” the doctor said flatly. “And underfed for a newborn his age.”
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered.
Then the doctor added:
“And these marks on your wife’s wrists… they’re not accidental.”
Silence.
A hospital social worker entered the room.
Then a police officer.
Ethan blinked.
“What is happening?”
The doctor answered calmly:
“We are required to report suspected neglect and physical abuse.”
At that moment, Patricia and Courtney arrived at the hospital.
Patricia was furious.
“This is ridiculous. She’s just dramatic after childbirth.”
Courtney nodded quickly. “She’s manipulating him.”
But when the police asked simple questions, their story started to break.
Who fed the baby?
Who was alone with Hannah?
Why were there bruises?
Their answers didn’t match.
In another room, Hannah finally woke up.
Weak voice.
Shaking hands.
“Ethan…” she whispered.
He grabbed her hand immediately.
“I’m here.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“They didn’t let me sleep,” she said. “They said I was useless… they took the baby when I tried to hold him.”
Ethan froze.
That was the moment everything inside him changed.
Not suspicion anymore.
Clarity.
Down the hall, the police officer said quietly:
“We may need to separate all three for questioning.”
Patricia tried to protest.
But the doctor interrupted her.
“I’ve seen enough injuries in my career to know when something is wrong.”
A pause.
“This is wrong.”
