Chapter 5 - The Tarmac ConfrontationThe rain was falling in torrential sheets across the wide asphalt apron of Fulton County Executive Airport.

A sleek, white Gulfstream G650 private jet sat near the edge of the runway, its twin engines whining loudly as they spooled up for departure. Standing near the bottom of the mobile air-stairs were two armed security guards, watching the perimeter with umbrellas raised.

Suddenly, four dark armored SUVs and three marked police cruisers tore across the tarmac, their siren lights flashing red and blue against the wet asphalt, forming a tight semicircle that blocked the jet's taxi path.

The doors of the SUVs burst open.

A dozen FBI SWAT agents in full tactical gear poured out, weapons raised, their tactical lights cutting through the blinding rain.

"FBI! GET ON THE GROUND! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

The two private security guards immediately raised their hands, tossing their weapons into the wet grass as tactical agents slammed them against the stairs, securing them in zip-ties.

I stepped out of the lead police cruiser alongside Detective Rachel Monroe and Prosecutor Marcus Vance, keeping my eyes fixed on the illuminated cabin door at the top of the air-stairs.

A man stepped out onto the top platform, holding a leather briefcase.

Charles Mercer.

He was no longer wearing his bespoke suit. He wore a plain raincoat, his face pale, his broken nose taped clumsily under a bandage. He looked up at the flashing blue lights, then down at the tactical team surrounding his plane, and finally his eyes landed on me.

For ten long seconds, nobody moved. The sound of the jet engines whined down into a low, dying whistle as the pilot shut down the turbines inside the cockpit.

"It’s over, Charles!" Prosecutor Vance shouted through a bullhorn, his voice echoing across the wide airfield. "Federal arrest warrant #4402! Step down the stairs with your hands on your head!"

Mercer didn't move. He stood at the top of the stairs, looking down at me with a look of terrifying, unyielding arrogance.

"You think you've won, Daniel?!" Mercer yelled across the rain, his voice strained against the wind. "Look at you! You're a middle-manager! You're a nobody! You spent twelve years building my company, and what do you have left?! Your wife is dead! Your brother is in a cage! Your mother is a felon! You have nothing!"

I took three slow steps forward, stepping out into the open rain, bypassing the tactical shield line until I was standing at the base of the metal stairs, looking directly up at the man who had ordered the destruction of my home.

"I have my daughter, Mercer," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried across the wet tarmac with the absolute weight of iron. "I have her safety. I have her trust. And I have the truth."

Mercer’s jaw worked silently. He looked at the FBI agents advancing up the stairs, looked at the hand-cuffs waiting for him, and for the first time since I had known him, I saw absolute, unadulterated fear flash across his eyes.

He dropped the leather briefcase. It fell down the metal steps, tumbling onto the wet asphalt, popping open to reveal thousands of dollars in foreign currency and offshore bank bearer bonds that scattered into the rain.

Two FBI agents grabbed Mercer by the arms, forcing his hands behind his back, and slammed the steel cuffs tightly around his wrists.

As they dragged him down the stairs past me, Mercer looked at me, his breath coming in fast, ragged gasps.

"She... she wouldn't give me the drive, Daniel," Mercer muttered, his voice cracking. "If she had just given me the drive, none of this would have happened..."

I looked at Charles Mercer—the powerful, untouchable executive who had bought my brother and corrupted my mother—and realized he was nothing more than a coward who thought money could buy protection from the horror he had created.

"My wife died protecting her family from you," I said, looking him dead in the eye as the agents pushed him into the back of an armored transport. "And you're going to die in a cage thinking about her name."

The heavy door of the transport slammed shut, cutting off his face forever.
