Chapter 6 - A Home Built on Light

Two years later.

The summer sun shone brightly over a beautiful green two-acre property in West Glen, twenty miles outside the city limits of Des Moines.

A sweet breeze blew through the oak trees, rustling the leaves of the garden Grace had planted behind our new farmhouse—a home purchased entirely in Grace’s name, built with wide windows, open space, and endless sunlight.

On the lush green lawn, two-year-old Sam was running after a golden retriever puppy, laughing hysterically as his tiny sneakers kicked up grass. He was healthy, strong, and bursting with life, his dark curly hair shining under the summer sky.

Grace sat on the wooden porch swing, wearing a soft white sundress, sketching in her notebook. She had published a memoir and child-advocacy guide six months ago that had become an international bestseller, helping thousands of young women recognize and escape domestic and family abuse.

I walked out onto the porch holding two cold glasses of lemonade.

I set the glasses down on the table, sat beside Grace, and wrapped my arm around her shoulder.

She leaned her head against my chest, watching Sam chase the puppy across the yard.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked softly, kissing the top of her hair.

Grace looked down at her hands. The deep purple scars on her wrists had faded into faint, silvery lines—barely visible unless the light hit them just right.

She reached up, took my hand, and intertwined her fingers with mine.

“I was thinking about how dark that room was,” Grace whispered, her voice filled with a deep, peaceful warmth. “And how bright today is.”

“The dark is gone, Grace,” I said softly. “It’s never coming back.”

Sam ran up to the porch steps, holding a bright yellow dandelion in his chubby little fist, his face lit up with pure, unburdened joy.

“Mommy! Daddy! Look!” Sam cheered, holding the flower up to Grace. “For you!”

Grace leaned down, taking the dandelion, and pulled our son into a tight, warm embrace, kissing his rosy cheeks while he giggled uncontrollably.

I wrapped my arms around both of them, pulling them close against my heart.

I had failed them once because of my cowardice. But I had fought for them, bled for them, and rebuilt our lives on a foundation of truth, protection, and unshakeable love.

As the sun began to set over the rolling hills of Iowa, casting a golden glow over our home, I knew with absolute certainty that we were finally whole.

We were safe. We were free. And our story was just beginning.
