Chapter 2 - The Raid

The front doors of the estate were kicked open with a thunderous CRACK.
"State Police! Search warrant! Nobody move!"
Heavy, tactical footsteps flooded the marble foyer downstairs. Captain Marcus Hayes of the Elder Abuse Task Force led six uniformed officers and two emergency medical paramedics up the grand staircase, their sidearms drawn and flashlights cutting through the dim hallway.
"Julian Vance! Chloe Vance! Step away from the Assistant Attorney General immediately!" Captain Hayes barked, his voice booming off the walls.
Julian backed up against the wall, his hands raised in panic. "Captain! This is a terrible mistake! I am her son! I am her legal guardian! My sister is mentally unstable and interfering with my mother's medical care!"
Chloe panicked, turning around and sprinting toward the master bedroom at the end of the hall, attempting to slam the door.
"Stop her!" I yelled. "She's going to destroy the financial records!"
Two officers tackled Chloe before she could reach the door handle, forcing her down onto the carpet as metal handcuffs clicked tightly over her wrists.
"Get off me! You can't touch me! Do you know who my father is?!" Chloe shrieked, thrashing against the floor as her expensive gold bracelets clattered against the wood. "Julian, do something!"
Captain Hayes stepped directly up to Julian, slamming him against the wall and pulling his arms behind his back. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for First-Degree Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, Criminal Elder Abuse, and Grand Extortion."
"This is madness!" Julian spat, turning his head toward me as the cuffs locked around his wrists. "Elena! Tell them to stop! We're family! You're destroying our family over an old woman who won't even remember your name next year!"
I didn't answer him. I walked past him as if he were invisible, ushering the two female paramedics into the bathroom.
My mother was sitting on the edge of the chair, holding her blanket tight. When she saw the paramedics and the police officers, tears spilled over her cheeks, but this time, they were not tears of fear.
"Miss Vance," the lead paramedic said gently, kneeling beside her with a medical kit. "We are here to take care of you. You're safe now."
Evelyn looked past the paramedic to me. "Elena... is it over?"
I knelt down beside her, taking her small, cold hand into both of mine. "It's just beginning, Mom. But they will never, ever lay a finger on you again."
As the officers dragged Julian and Chloe downstairs in handcuffs, the news vans from local television stations—notified by the state police communications dispatcher—were already arriving at the end of the driveway, their bright camera lights illuminating the night sky.
Julian tried to hide his face behind his shoulder, but the camera operators captured every second of his arrest: the polished corporate executive being loaded into the back of a police cruiser like a common criminal.
Captain Hayes stepped up beside me on the front porch as the ambulance pulled up to transport my mother to the university hospital for a complete medical evaluation.
"We searched the master bedroom safe downstairs, Elena," Captain Hayes said, holding up an evidence bag containing three thick leather-bound journals, five external hard drives, and a heavily annotated set of legal documents. "Your sister-in-law was thorough. She kept a written ledger of every asset they liquidated, every prescription drug they bought to keep your mother sedated, and a list of shell companies they set up to launder the money."
"Did they have help?" I asked, my eyes narrowing. "A lawyer had to execute those fake title transfers."

Captain Hayes offered a cold, predatory smile. "We found a series of emails between Julian and a corrupt notary public named Arthur Pendelton. Pendelton's office is being raided by state troopers as we speak."
"Good," I said, watching the ambulance doors close with my mother safely inside. "I want every single person who profited from my mother's pain brought down in chains."
