Chapter 2 - The Red Seal

Julian standing in the hallway looked like a man who had suddenly stepped off a cliff into thin air.

His face drained of all color, the crystal whiskey glass in his hand trembling so violently that amber liquid splashed onto his leather shoes.

"This... this is a mistake," Julian stammered, stepping backward away from Elena. "Chloe, call Arthur! Call Deputy Hayes right now!"

"Hayes won't answer, Julian," Elena said flatly, watching her brother unravel. "Deputy Hayes was suspended thirty minutes ago by Sheriff Ross pending an internal affairs investigation into official misconduct and receiving illegal kickbacks from your development firm."

Chloe let out a shriek, frantically tapping her phone screen, only to see her calls dropping instantly.

Below, the heavy oak front door was breached with a sharp, explosive CRACK.

"STATE POLICE! SHERIFF'S OFFICE! CLEAR THE GROUND FLOOR!"

Footsteps thundered up the stairs. Within seconds, four state troopers in heavy tactical gear, led personally by County Sheriff Michael Ross—a towering, gray-haired veteran officer with a stern, granite face—rounded the landing with drawn sidearms.

"Julian Vance! Chloe Vance! Keep your hands where we can see them!" Sheriff Ross commanded, his voice filling the corridor.

Julian raised his hands instinctively, dropping the whiskey glass. It shattered against the hardwood floor. "Sheriff Ross! Listen to me! This is my sister, Elena! She’s having a personal family dispute! She broke into my home and—"

"Shut your mouth, Vance," Sheriff Ross barked, stepping forward and shoving Julian against the wall, pulling his arms behind his back.

CLICK-CLACK.

The heavy steel handcuffs snapped around Julian’s wrists.

"You can't arrest me!" Julian screamed, struggling against the restraint. "I am the legal guardian of this estate! I have a power of attorney!"

Sheriff Ross pulled a stamped document from his tactical vest, slapping it against Julian’s chest. "Emergency Ex Parte Protective Order signed by Judge Arthur Thorne twenty minutes ago. Emergency temporary guardianship of Clara Vance is transferred immediately to Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance. Your power of attorney is officially revoked and frozen."

A female deputy stepped up to Chloe, who was hyperventilating against the wall, and clicked a second pair of cuffs around her manicured wrists.

"Chloe Vance," the deputy recited calmly, "you are under arrest for felony elder abuse, false imprisonment, and destruction of evidence. You have the right to remain silent..."

"Julian! Do something!" Chloe shrieked as she was pulled toward the stairs. "Tell them about the papers! Tell them about the lake house!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" Julian roared, his face flushed purple with rage as Sheriff Ross pushed him down the hallway.

As Julian passed Elena, he stopped, leaning his head toward her, his teeth bared in a feral snarl. "You think you won tonight, Elena? You haven't seen anything! Every dime of Mom's money is legally tied up in offshore corporate trusts registered under my company! You won't find a single cent! She'll die a penniless charity case, and you can't prove a damn thing!"

Elena didn't flinch. She stepped forward, looking down at her brother with a look of supreme, quiet pity.

"I don't need to look for the money, Julian," Elena said softly. "The State Financial Crimes Unit seized your corporate servers ten minutes ago. We already know about the Swiss shell account in Zurich."

Julian’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror. The last remnant of his arrogant defense vanished into thin air. He looked at his sister not as a family member, but as the relentless state prosecutor who had just destroyed his life.

Sheriff Ross dragged Julian down the stairs, his curses echoing through the empty house until the front door slammed shut.

The hallway fell into a profound, ringing silence.

Elena turned back to her mother. Clara was standing near the bathroom door, clutching her cotton robe, tears streaming silently down her pale cheeks. But for the first time in years, the paralyzing terror in her eyes was gone—replaced by the quiet, trembling dawn of safety.

Elena walked over, wrapping her arms around her mother, holding her gently against her chest.

"It's over, Mom," Elena whispered, pressing a kiss to her mother's gray hair. "They're never going to touch you again."

"Oh, my sweet girl..." Clara sobbed, burying her face in Elena’s shoulder. "I thought... I thought I was going to die in this house."

"No," Elena said, pulling back to wipe her mother's tears. "You're coming home with me tonight."

Thirty minutes later, an emergency medical transport vehicle arrived at the house. Dr. Sarah Lin, a senior forensic medical examiner from the State Protection Bureau, stepped into the living room accompanied by two paramedics.

"Elena," Dr. Lin said softly, placing a supportive hand on Elena’s shoulder. "We need to take Clara to the State University Medical Center for a complete forensic examination, toxicology screen, and treatment for her physical injuries."

"I'm coming with her," Elena stated immediately.

"Of course," Dr. Lin agreed. "We've already set up a private room in the secure wing."

As the paramedics carefully assisted Clara onto the stretcher, wrapping her in a warm, clean blanket, Sheriff Ross walked up to Elena holding a heavy black leather briefcase he had seized from Julian’s private study.

"Elena," Sheriff Ross said, his voice grave. "We found this inside Julian's wall safe downstairs. You need to see this."

Sheriff Ross popped the brass latches of the briefcase and opened it. Inside were dozens of land deeds, stock certificates, and a thick, red-sealed legal folder labeled: LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF CLARA VANCE — AMENDED.

Elena picked up the red-sealed folder, opening it to the final page.

It was a revised will, dated six weeks ago. It stripped Elena of all inheritance, assigned all real estate and liquid assets to Julian, and contained Clara’s signature at the bottom.

Elena looked closely at the signature.

Her prosecutor’s eye immediately caught the subtle, shaky irregular line weight—the classic signature of a person whose hand was physically forced onto the paper while under severe physical restraint.

Beside the forged signature was the official notary stamp and signature of a local attorney: VERNON CROSS, ESQ.

Elena’s jaw set into iron.

Vernon Cross was Julian’s senior corporate lawyer—a powerful, crooked estate attorney who had dominated the county's probate courts for thirty years.

"Sheriff," Elena said, holding up the notarized document. "Who notarized this will?"

"Vernon Cross," Ross replied, nodding grimly. "Cross is the one who filed the fraudulent estate transfers at the county land registry last month."

Elena closed the red-sealed folder, her eyes burning with an unyielding, righteous fire.

"Julian and Chloe were just the fists, Sheriff," Elena said, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal frequency. "Vernon Cross is the architect who built the cage."

Elena turned to look at her mother as the paramedics wheeled her toward the ambulance.

"Tell Cross to get his best defense team ready," Elena added, tucking the red-sealed folder under her arm. "Because tomorrow morning, I’m tearing his entire firm down to the foundation."
