Chapter 4 - The Plea from the CellsThree weeks later, the extradition was complete. Evelyn, Chloe, and Mark were being held at the Rikers Island Correctional Facility, waiting for their formal indictment trial.

Without my financial support, their world had completely shattered.

Mark’s business creditors, learning of his felony arrest and removal from my real estate firm, had foreclosed on his commercial properties. Chloe’s luxury car was repossessed. Evelyn’s suburban home, which was legally titled under my asset trust, had been locked and placed up for sale by my legal team, with all proceeds redirected into a irrevocable trust fund for my son, Liam.

On a cold Tuesday morning, I sat behind a thick glass partition in the visitor center at Rikers Island.

A moment later, the heavy metal door opened, and Evelyn was led inside by a correctional officer.

The woman sitting across from me bore almost no resemblance to the polished, arrogant matriarch who had lounged in South Beach three weeks ago. Evelyn was wearing a grey prison jumpsuit. Her hair was unwashed, her face was gaunt, and her eyes were wild with desperation and terror.

She picked up the wall phone with trembling hands. I picked up mine.

“David!” she sobbed into the receiver, pressing her hand against the glass. “David, my baby! Thank God you came! You have to get us out of here! This place is a nightmare! They treat us like animals!”

I sat motionless, watching her without a trace of pity. “You look uncomfortable, Evelyn.”

“Uncomfortable?” she wailed. “David, I’m your mother! I raised you! I gave you everything! How could you do this to me? How could you put your own mother and sister in prison over that worthless girl?”

My eyes narrowed into slits. “Say one more word about my wife, Evelyn, and I will walk out of this room right now and ensure the prosecutor demands the maximum sentence.”

Evelyn flinched, shutting her mouth abruptly. The sheer authority in my voice terrified her. She realized, perhaps for the first time in her life, that the gentle, accommodating son she had manipulated for decades was dead.

“David... please,” she whimpered, her tone shifting into desperate pleading. “We made a mistake! We were selfish! But we didn't mean to hurt the baby! We thought Maya was just complaining! You know how women get after giving birth—”

“I watched fifteen hours of security camera footage, Evelyn,” I interrupted, my voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register. “I heard you call my wife lazy while she bled on the floor. I watched you pack Liam’s formula into Mark’s car while he whimpered from hunger. I saw the handwritten note telling her to 'make do' while you spent my money on champagne in Miami.”

Evelyn swallowed hard, unable to meet my gaze.

“You didn't make a mistake,” I continued. “You made a choice. You decided that my wife’s life and my son’s survival were worth less than a luxury vacation. You thought because I was in Germany, I would never find out.”

“David... I’m an old woman,” she cried, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. “I won't survive five years in prison! Chloe is losing her mind! Mark’s career is destroyed! Haven't you punished us enough?”

“This isn't punishment, Evelyn,” I said, holding her gaze with unyielding coldness. “This is accountability. You spent thirty years teaching me that actions have consequences. Now you get to learn that lesson yourself.”

“Please!” she begged, banging her fist against the glass as I stood up. “David! Don't leave me! You’re my son!”

May you like

“No,” I said softly, holding the phone close to my lips. “I am a husband and a father. And those two roles mean you no longer have a son.”

I hung up the phone, set it back on the wall hook, and walked out of the visitor room without looking back once. Behind the heavy steel door, Evelyn’s hysterical screams echoed down the concrete corridor, fading into nothingness as the heavy doors slammed shut behind me.
