Chapter 3 - The Miami Meltdown

While Maya slept soundly in the warm security of the ICU under the watchful eyes of hospital staff and private security guards I had hired to stand outside her door, three hundred miles to the south, Eleanor’s luxurious paradise was turning into a waking nightmare.

At 2:30 a.m. at the front desk of The Breakers Resort in South Beach, Miami, the ambient lighting was soft, the ocean breeze was warm, and the atmosphere was dripping with wealth.

Eleanor stood at the marble reception counter, her face flushed with a mixture of alcohol and intense, embarrassment-fueled rage. Behind her stood Chloe, wearing a fifteen-hundred-dollar silk cocktail dress, Mark, clutching a half-empty glass of scotch he hadn't yet paid for, and Ethan, nervously shifting his weight from foot to foot.

Two hotel security officers stood flanking the front desk manager, an impeccably dressed man named Julian, who was looking at Eleanor with a cold, unyielding professional posture.

"Ma'am," Julian said smoothly, his hands clasped neatly on the counter. "I will repeat this one last time. All four credit cards provided for your group's three oceanfront suites—including the primary American Express card under the name of David Miller—have been officially declined and flagged as revoked by the issuing bank."

"This is an outrage!" Eleanor shrieked, slamming her designer leather purse onto the polished marble counter so hard that several lobby guests turned to stare. "My son is a high-level corporate executive! He has hundreds of thousands of dollars in that account! This is a technical glitch on your end, or your credit card machine is broken! I demand you process the charge again immediately!"

"We have attempted to process the charge five times, Mrs. Miller," Julian replied, without dropping his polite facade. "The bank’s fraud department has explicitly placed an emergency restriction on the account, citing unauthorized usage and potential grand larceny."

Chloe stepped forward, her eyes wide with frantic indignation. "Do you know who we are?! We are VIP guests! We reserved these suites three weeks ago! Our luggage is already up in the penthouse!"

"And your luggage will remain in the holding office until the balance of nine thousand four hundred dollars for your stay, restaurant charges, and spa services is settled in full," Julian stated firmly. "Furthermore, the management of LIV Nightclub has contacted us regarding an unpaid tab of five thousand two hundred dollars from your table tonight. They are currently sending their security detail to this lobby."

Mark’s face drained of color. "Wait... what? Five thousand at the club?!"

"You ordered three bottles of Dom Pérignon, Mark!" Ethan hissed under his breath, sweating profusely. "I told you to wait until we cleared the card at the hotel!"

"Shut up, Ethan!" Eleanor barked, pulling out her phone with trembling fingers. She dialed my number again. It went straight to voicemail.

"You have reached the voicemail of David Miller. Leave a message."

"David!" Eleanor screamed into the phone speaker, completely losing her composure as hotel guests stopped to watch the spectacle. "Answer your phone right now, you ungrateful, wretched boy! What did you do to your credit cards?! We are stranded in the hotel lobby in Miami! People are looking at us! Fix this right now or so help me God, I will fly back to New York and—"

Her tirade was cut short by the arrival of three men walking briskly through the grand glass doors of the resort lobby.

Two were Miami-Dade Police officers in dark blue uniforms. The third was a sharp-looking man in a gray linen suit holding a thick leather briefcase.

"Eleanor Miller? Chloe Miller? Mark Higgins?" the man in the gray suit asked, stepping up to the front desk and eyeing the group with icy precision.

Eleanor straightened her posture, assuming her typical imperious tone. "Yes! I am Eleanor Miller! Are you the hotel general manager? Finally, someone with some authority! These incompetent fools at the front desk are—"

"I am not the manager, Mrs. Miller," the man interrupted calmly, reaching into his coat and pulling out a silver badge alongside a stack of legal documents. "I am Detective Raymond with the Miami-Dade Police Department, attached to the Financial Crimes and Extradition Division. And I am accompanied by officers acting on an emergency interstate warrant issued one hour ago by the New York State Supreme Court."

The lobby fell dead silent.

Chloe’s eyes bulged. "A... a warrant? For what?!"

Detective Raymond looked down at his tablet, reading directly from the official court filing.

"Eleanor Miller, Chloe Miller, Mark Higgins, and Ethan Higgins. You are under arrest pursuant to New York Penal Law Section 125.25: Attempted Depraved Indifference Murder; Section 260.10: Endangering the Welfare of a Child; Section 155.40: Grand Larceny in the Second Degree; and Section 135.60: Coercion and Unlawful Imprisonment."

Eleanor’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. She staggered backward, clutching her chest. "W-what?! This is a mistake! This is a ridiculous misunderstanding! My son... my son David must have made a mistake—"

"Your son David is the primary complaining witness," Detective Raymond stated coldly, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs off his belt. "He has provided the NYPD with over forty-eight hours of high-definition internal security video, bank wire transfer records, medical reports from New York-Presbyterian Hospital confirming severe post-operative septic infection of his wife, and documented evidence that you locked a mother and an eleven-day-old infant in an unheated apartment after sabotaging their communications and stealing fourteen thousand dollars."

"No!" Chloe screamed as one of the police officers grabbed her arm, twisting it behind her back and clicking a pair of handcuffs onto her wrists. "Get your hands off me! David lied! Maya is crazy! She’s trying to frame us!"

"You have the right to remain silent," the officer recited in a flat, mechanical tone, shoving Chloe forward toward the exit. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Mark tried to run toward the side doors, but the second police officer reacted instantly, sweeping Mark’s legs out from under him. Mark hit the polished marble floor hard on his stomach with a loud smack, groaning in pain as the officer pinned his shoulder to the ground and cuffed him.

"My suit! This suit costs eight hundred dollars!" Mark howled from the floor.

"You can wear a orange jumpsuit for the next ten years, buddy," the officer growled, hauling Mark up by his collar.

Eleanor stood frozen, looking at the handcuffs Detective Raymond was holding out toward her. Tears of absolute panic, public humiliation, and bitter rage streamed down her heavily makeup-covered face. The high-society guests of the Breakers Resort were filming the entire scene on their smartphones, whispering and laughing as the great Eleanor Miller was stripped of her arrogance.

"He's my son..." Eleanor whimpered, her voice cracking into a pathetic, desperate squeak as Detective Raymond snapped the cuffs onto her wrists. "I am his mother... he can't do this to me... family doesn't do this..."

"Family doesn't leave an infant to freeze to death while they spend stolen money on champagne, ma'am," Detective Raymond replied with disgust, leading her out through the grand entrance into the flashing red-and-blue lights of three waiting police cruisers.

As Eleanor was forced into the back seat of the police car, her eyes caught her reflection in the dark glass window.

The golden life she had built on my hard work, my generosity, and my silent tolerance was officially over.
