Chapter 5 - The Gala of ReckoningThe Grand Ballroom of the US Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego was a sea of glittering crystal chandeliers, white orchids, and two hundred of the city’s most influential business leaders, politicians, and socialites.

Soft string quartet music floated through the warm air as guests in tuxedos and floor-length gowns sipped champagne, discussing the evening's main event: the annual presentation of the Civic Leadership Award, which Janelle Ambrose had presided over for the past decade.

Tonight, however, Janelle was nowhere to be found on the stage.

Sitting at Table 4 near the front of the room was Ryan Ambrose, looking immaculate in a Tom Ford tuxedo, though his eyes were frantic, constantly scanning the crowd. Sitting beside him was Victoria Sterling—a tall, striking blonde in a plunging red silk gown, holding a champagne flute with an air of triumphant arrogance.

"Relax, Ryan," Victoria whispered, sliding her manicured hand over his knee under the table. "Everything is set. The press releases for Vanguard Luxe hit the wire in ten minutes. Once the board sees our projections, Charlotte won't be able to touch us without tanking her own reputation."

"I just don't like that she isn't here yet," Ryan muttered nervously, swallowing half his glass of scotch. "Charlotte never misses this gala. If she’s setting something up—"

"She’s hiding in La Jolla crying into her pillow," Victoria scoffed lightly. "She’s a boutique owner, Ryan. She doesn't have the stomach for a real corporate fight."

At that exact moment, the grand double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The hum of conversation in the room abruptly died down.

Charlotte Ruiz walked into the ballroom.

She looked breathtaking. She wore a custom, backless column gown of deep emerald silk from her own atelier’s upcoming fall collection, adorned with a single vintage diamond necklace that caught the chandelier light like shattered ice. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, her posture regal, her steps confident and unhurried.

Walking three paces behind her was Marcus Vance and two men in tailored dark suits with discreet brass lapel pins—detectives from the San Diego District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Unit.

Ryan stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the parquet floor. "Charlotte..."

Charlotte didn't even look at him. She walked straight past Table 4 toward the main stage, where the event master of ceremonies—a prominent city councilman—was standing behind the podium.

"Councilman," Charlotte said smoothly, reaching the microphone. "May I have two minutes to address our guests before the awards begin?"

The councilman, aware that Charlotte’s retail chain was the primary financial sponsor of the entire evening, stepped back with a warm smile. "Of course, Mrs. Ambrose. The floor is yours."

Charlotte stepped up to the podium. She surveyed the room, her eyes sweeping over the sea of curious faces, finally locking onto Ryan and Victoria at Table 4.

"Good evening, everyone," Charlotte’s voice echoed rich and clear through the ballroom speakers. "For five years, I have had the privilege of standing before you as a member of the Ambrose family. Tonight, however, I am speaking to you simply as Charlotte Ruiz—founder and CEO of Ruiz Atelier."

A murmur of confusion went through the crowd. Ryan took a step toward the stage, his face pale. "Charlotte, stop this right now!"

Charlotte continued, her tone unruffled, almost conversational.

"Many of you came tonight expecting to hear a speech from my mother-in-law, Janelle Ambrose, on the importance of family values and marital integrity," Charlotte said. "Regrettably, Mrs. Ambrose could not join us tonight, as she is currently assisting the San Diego Police Department with an investigation regarding an unregistered luxury vehicle and a substantial sum of missing funds."

Gasp! A collective shock rippled through the audience. Heads turned frantically toward Table 4.

"Charlotte! Shut your mouth!" Ryan roared, charging toward the stage!

Before he could reach the steps, the two detectives in dark suits stepped into his path, blocking him with iron strength. "Sir, remain where you are."

"What is the meaning of this?!" Victoria Sterling shouted, standing up in her red gown, her eyes flashing with fury. "This is an official business gathering! You have no right to slander us!"

"I’m not slandering you, Victoria," Charlotte said calmly from the podium. She picked up a remote control resting on the lectern and clicked a button.

Behind her, the massive twenty-foot projection screen—intended for the charity presentation—flickered to life.

Instantly, high-resolution document scans filled the screen: bank statements, wire transfers, property deeds, and corporate filings showing six million dollars illegally funneled from Charlotte’s accounts directly into Vanguard Luxe and Victoria Sterling’s personal offshore holdings.

And right below the bank statements was a crystal-clear video clip from forty-eight hours ago: Janelle Ambrose in the back of the white SUV, frantically kissing Jaxson Drake in the mud-soaked lot on Sunset Boulevard.

The ballroom exploded into utter bedlam!

Flashbulbs began popping frantically as press reporters pulled out their cameras! Guests gasped, covered their mouths, and pulled out their phones to record the screen!

"My God!" someone shouted from the front table. "Look at those transfers!"

"That’s embezzled money!" another business leader exclaimed.

Ryan stared up at the projection screen, his eyes wide with unadulterated terror, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Victoria Sterling dropped her champagne glass, which shattered across the floor, her face draining of all color as she realized what was happening.

"Ryan Ambrose and Victoria Sterling," Charlotte said softly into the microphone, her voice cutting through the chaos like a silver blade. "You built a business out of my hard work, my trust, and my money. But an empire built on theft is nothing more than a house of cards."

Charlotte clicked the remote once more.

The grand doors at the back of the ballroom burst open, and six uniformed police officers along with two federal agents walked briskly down the center aisle, pulling handcuffs from their belts.

"Ryan Ambrose, Victoria Sterling," the lead federal agent announced loudly, his voice booming across the silent ballroom. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate wire fraud, and interstate money laundering. Step away from the tables and keep your hands where we can see them."

Ryan tried to turn and run toward the side exit, but he slipped on the spilt champagne from Victoria’s glass, crashing heavily onto his knees on the hardwood floor. The officers swarmed him instantly, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping the metal cuffs onto his wrists.

"Charlotte! Please!" Ryan sobbed, his face pressed against the floor, tears streaming down his cheeks as the cameras flashed relentlessly in his face. "Charlotte, I love you! It was Victoria's idea! She forced me to do it! Please don't do this to me!"

Victoria screamed in fury as an officer cuffed her manicured wrists. "You pathetic coward! You told me she would never find out!"

Charlotte stepped down from the stage, walking slowly past the pair as they were hauled to their feet by the arresting officers.

She stopped right in front of Ryan, looking down at him with an expression of complete, untroubled serenity.

"You said money can never buy class, Ryan," Charlotte whispered softly, so only he could hear. "You were right. But it certainly buys a very good legal team. Enjoy your trial."
