Chapter 5 - The Siege at The Northern TableBy Saturday afternoon, the rain had cleared, leaving the Brooklyn waterfront bathed in a sharp, cold autumnal sunlight.

The iron security gates of The Northern Table were pulled half down. Inside, the rustic dining room—usually filled with the rich smells of garlic, simmering marinara, and fresh rosemary—was dead silent.
Four armed men in tailored black suits stood near the bar, their weapons concealed beneath their jackets, while Valon Meta stood at the center of the room, leaning against a scarred oak table.
Sigrid stood beside him, her arms crossed over her wool coat, her eyes fixed on the heavy wooden doors leading to the back kitchen.
"You shouldn't have brought me here," Sigrid said quietly. "It's a trap."
"That is precisely why we are here," Valon replied, not looking at her. His gaze was fixed on the kitchen doors. "If a trap is set, you spring it on your terms, not theirs."
"I am pregnant, Valon. I shouldn't be walking into a shootout—"
"You are not walking into anything," Valon interrupted, turning his dark eyes to hers with absolute, unyielding finality. "You are staying behind me. Always."
Before Sigrid could argue, the heavy oak kitchen doors creaked open.
Stepping out from the shadows of the prep area was not a rival mobster or a hired gun.
It was Marcus Vance, Valon’s own chief legal counsel and head of family security operations. Behind him stood two men holding submachine guns, their faces grim.
Valon didn't flinch. He didn't even reach for the Sig Sauer P320 tucked into his waistband. He simply stood there, a dark monolith of absolute authority.
"Marcus," Valon said, his voice smooth as glass. "I wondered when you'd stop hiding behind my brother's shell corporations."
Marcus smiled, a thin, humorless stretching of his lips. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, looking remarkably calm for a man staring down the most dangerous syndicate boss in the Northeast.
"Nikolas always lacked patience, Valon," Marcus said smoothly. "He wanted you dead years ago on the docks. But I told him—why kill a king when you can legally inherit his kingdom? All we needed was for the divorce petition to clear. A clean break. No spousal claims, no heirs, no residual rights to the waterfront properties."
"And the baby?" Valon asked, his voice dropping an octave, the temperature in the room plunging into the negative. "Did Nikolas plan on raising my child?"
"The baby was an unfortunate biological miscalculation," Marcus said, raising his hand slightly to signal the men behind him. "Dr. Vance is a very agreeable woman when her offshore accounts are properly funded. A quiet medical procedure during your wife's recovery at St. Jude's was already scheduled for tonight."
Sigrid gasped, her hand flying to her lower abdomen.
Valon moved.
It wasn't a motion; it was an explosion.
In less than a second, Valon had drawn his sidearm, firing twice through the oak table with terrifying precision. The sharp crack-crack of gunfire echoed off the tin ceiling of the restaurant.
Marcus's left-hand gunman dropped instantly, clutching his shoulder as his submachine gun clattered across the checkered tile floor.
The second gunman raised his weapon, but Valon was already vaulting over the table, closing the distance with the ferocious speed of a apex predator. A single kick to the man's chest sent him crashing backward into the bar stools, knocking him out cold.
Marcus panicked, his professional composure shattering as he fumbled inside his jacket for a snub-nosed revolver.
He never cleared the leather.
Valon’s heavy boot slammed down on Marcus’s wrist, pinning his hand against the floorboards with a sickening crunch of bone. Marcus screamed, dropping the weapon as Valon pressed the cold black barrel of his Sig Sauer directly against the lawyer's forehead.
"You talk too much, Marcus," Valon whispered, his face inches from the terrified man's eyes. "And you touched what is mine."
"Valon... wait—" Marcus choked out, tears streaming down his face. "Nikolas... Nikolas has the cargo ships... he has the board—"
"Nikolas is currently being detained by federal marshals at Zurich airport," Valon said coldly, cocking the hammer of his pistol. "And you are going to tell me every single name on the family council who signed off on this."

Sigrid stood frozen near the front entrance, watching her husband. The cold, ruthless mafia boss who ruled the New York harbor with iron and blood was terrifying. But as Valon slowly lowered the gun, turned around, and walked toward her with his chest heaving and his eyes scanning her body for any sign of harm, she saw something else entirely.
She saw a man who had burned down an empire to protect a single heartbeat.
