Chapter 4 - THE UNRAVELING OF ELENAElena stood frozen in the shadow of the arched hallway, the ambient music from the ballroom throbbing against the walls like a distant heartbeat. Her carefully styled blonde-brown hair fell over one shoulder, and her designer evening dress suddenly looked like armor that had just been stripped away.

“Logan?” Elena’s voice trembled, breaking the heavy silence between the three of them. She looked from Logan to Hannah, taking in the service uniform, the dark wig in Hannah’s hand, and the raw, unmasked fury radiating from both of them. “Who is she?”

Logan closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, his shoulders slumping as he realized the fragile, meticulously built web of lies he had constructed over a decade was disintegrating in real time.

“Elena, go back inside,” Logan urged, taking a step toward her with his hands raised defensively. “This is a private family matter. I’ll handle it.”

“Family matter?” Elena echoed, stepping backward, her eyes flashing with sudden realization and defensive heat. “I’ve spent ten years playing the ghost, Logan! Ten years living in apartments you paid for with secret accounts, told to stay away from public events, told that your wife could never find out because it would ruin your standing at Whitaker Logistics! And now I walk out here and find your wife—disguised as a waitress—tearing you apart in a hallway?”

Hannah watched them quietly, leaning against the wall with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a chemical reaction. So Elena wasn't just a casual fling from the past. She was a willing participant in the deception, conditioned to remain hidden in the shadows for the sake of Logan’s social status and inheritance.

“You knew about me?” Hannah asked, her voice cutting cleanly through Elena and Logan’s escalating argument.

Elena stopped, turning her gaze toward Hannah. For a moment, defiance flickered in her eyes, but seeing the absolute lack of fear or fragility in Hannah’s posture drained the fight right out of her.

“I didn't know you personally,” Elena said quietly, looking down at the marble floor. “Logan told me... he told me you were emotionally unstable after the miscarriage. He said your marriage was just a legal formality, an empty shell, and that you couldn't give him what he needed. He promised that once his mother’s estate was settled and his position as managing partner was secure, he would leave you and make us a real family.”

Logan groaned, rubbing his face with both hands. “Elena, shut up! Stop making it worse!”

“Making it worse? You told me it was safe to come tonight, Logan!” Elena’s voice rose sharply, echoing down the empty corridor. “Your mother invited us! Gertrude knew I was coming. She’s the one who arranged for the seats right next to you! She wanted to rub your wife’s face in it eventually—she just wanted to wait until the right moment!”

The revelation hit Hannah with the force of a physical blow, though her expression barely shifted. Gertrude. Of course. The woman who had blamed Hannah for the lost pregnancy for nine years hadn't just tolerated Logan’s infidelity—she had orchestrated it, sheltered it, and invited the other woman into her birthday celebration as the ultimate act of psychological warfare.

“My mother invited you?” Logan stared at Elena in horror.

“Of course she did!” Elena snapped, tears of humiliation finally springing to her eyes. “Do you think I would have walked into a room full of your elite family members without permission? Gertrude called me three weeks ago. She told me it was time to bring Liam out of the shadows. She said she was tired of waiting for you to grow a spine and divorce your barren wife.”

The word hung in the air like poison smoke. Barren.

Logan looked frantically at Hannah, opening and closing his mouth like a fish out of water. “Hannah... wait. That’s not... my mother shouldn't have—”

“Your mother,” Hannah interrupted, her voice dropping to a whisper so cold it made the air feel sub-zero, “is going to have a very interesting dessert tonight.”

She dropped the dark wig onto the floor, turned her back on both of them without another word, and picked up her service tray.
