Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

The clock on the wall struck 8:00 AM. The frosted glass doors that separated the conference room from the main executive boardroom slowly slid open, revealing the ten members of the board of directors of Vance Industries. They sat in silence, their faces grim, their laptops open to the financial disaster that had unfolded over the last eight hours.
"What is the meaning of this?" Daniel demanded, trying to regain his posture as he marched toward the boardroom table. "This is my company! I am the founder!"
"You were the founder, Daniel," said Arthur Pendelton, the senior board member and a long-time ally of my late husband. "But as of 12:01 AM, Apex Sovereign Holdings executed its majority shareholder rights. Due to the immediate withdrawal of the core capitalization funds, Vance Industries is technically insolvent. We are currently operating on an emergency debtor-in-possession structure funded entirely by your mother."
Arthur looked at Vanessa, who was still standing by the door, her jaw dropped in absolute disbelief. "And under the corporate governance guidelines, any executive officer who exposes the firm to severe reputational risk through documented acts of personal or civil malice can be summarily terminated for cause."
"Reputational risk?!" Vanessa gasped. "This is a private family matter!"
"It ceased to be a private matter when the surveillance video of your behavior in the St. Jude's maternity suite was delivered to the compliance committee," Miriam Cole stated, turning a monitor toward the board members.
The screen played the video in high definition. It showed my arrival—the humble blue blanket in my arms. It showed Vanessa's mouth moving, the venom unmistakable even without the audio track. And then, it showed the physical push—the moment I lost my balance and fell against the medical equipment while Daniel stood by the window, his arms folded in calm, cold approval.
Several board members winced. One of them looked at Daniel with absolute disgust.
"This company relies heavily on state municipal contracts and family-forward branding," Arthur Pendelton said, slamming his folder shut. "If this footage were to be leaked, or if a civil suit for elder abuse were filed against the CEO’s wife with the CEO's documented complicity, our stock value would drop to zero by noon. The board has held a preliminary vote. The decision is unanimous."
Arthur looked directly at my son. "Daniel Vance, you are hereby terminated from your position as Chief Executive Officer of Vance Industries, effective immediately. Your corporate shares are frozen pending a full forensic audit of your personal expense accounts over the last three years."
"No!" Daniel cried out, rushing to the table, his hands slamming down onto the wood. "Arthur, please! You were my father’s friend! You can't let her do this to me! I have a newborn son! We have nowhere to go!"
"Then I suggest you find a job, Daniel," Arthur said quietly, not meeting his eyes. "Just like your mother did when she worked double shifts at the laundry facility to pay for your freshman tuition."
Vanessa stepped forward, her face pale, the blanket slipping from her shoulders to reveal her designer lounge clothes. "You can't do this! We’ll sue! We’ll take every penny of your stupid pension, you old bitch!"

I stood up from my chair for the first time. The room went absolutely silent. The security guards took a step closer to Vanessa, but I raised a hand, stopping them.
"You have nothing to sue with, Vanessa," I said, my voice dropping into a quiet, absolute finality. "Your accounts are empty. Your credit cards are canceled. The lifestyle you used to look down on me has vanished. You wanted an exclusive life for your son? You have one now. A life completely exclusive of my wealth, my protection, and my love. Now, leave my building."
