Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The terminal around Marcus and Evelyn seemed to blur, the announcements over the PA system fading into a dull white noise. Marcus stood frozen, the heavy laptop bag dangling from his shoulder. Every heartbeat felt like a hammer blow against his ribs. He looked down at the twin boys, carbon copies of his own childhood photographs, and then back at Evelyn’s trembling hands.

"My mother?" Marcus finally managed to choke out, the word tasting like ash. "What does Eleanor have to do with this?"

Evelyn closed her eyes tightly, a single tear escaping and tracking down her hollow, exhausted cheek. She pulled the two boys closer, as if she could shield them from the ghost of her past. "She came to my apartment, Marcus. The day before you were supposed to return from overseas. She didn't shout. She didn't threaten me. She just sat on my worn-out sofa and laid out the blueprint for my complete destruction."

"No," Marcus whispered, stepping closer despite his instincts screaming at him to stay back. "My mother wouldn't—she wouldn't ruin my life like that."

"She told me you were destined for the Vance Global portfolio, that marrying an orphan with no pedigree would drag you down into mediocrity," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper so as not to wake the sleeping boys. "Then she opened a leather folder. Inside were photographs of my younger brother, Leo, who was struggling through his final year of medical school. Your mother had paid off his tuition, his housing, his entire future. And she made it very clear: if I didn't pack a single bag, catch a one-way bus out of Chicago, and completely erase myself from your existence, she would call in every single loan, ensure Leo was expelled in disgrace, and make sure I spent the rest of my life running from debt collectors I could never outrun."

Marcus felt the room tilt. The multi-million-dollar hotel empire, the prestige, the carefully constructed pedestal his mother had placed him on—it all suddenly looked like a prison built on blackmail.

"She told me you agreed to it," Evelyn whispered, looking up with eyes that held six years of absolute devastation. "She said you were tired of my 'little working-class crusades' and that you wanted a clean break before you took over the family dynasty."

"I never said that," Marcus ground out, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. "I searched for you. I tore my office apart looking for your forwarding address."

"Because she managed the narrative," Evelyn replied bitterly. "She gave you just enough closure to make you stop looking, while making sure I was too terrified to ever look back."

Before Marcus could process the crushing weight of the revelation, his phone buzzed violently in his coat pocket. He pulled it out. It was his chief financial officer, demanding his urgent presence on the conference call for the Boston estate acquisition. The deal was worth forty million dollars. It was the crowning achievement of his professional life.

Marcus looked down at the phone, then back at Evelyn, who was gently stroking the hair of the twin who carried his exact eyebrow notch.

Without a moment of hesitation, Marcus pressed the power button on his phone, turning it completely off, and dropped it into the depths of his briefcase. The multi-million-dollar deal could burn to the ground for all he cared. His real life was sitting right here on a cold airport floor.

"We aren't finishing this conversation here," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, uncompromising tone that brooked no argument. He reached down, effortlessly hoisting the scuffed blue suitcase. "You're coming with me. All three of you."

Evelyn blinked in shock. "Marcus, I don't have money, I don't have—"

"You have me," Marcus interrupted fiercely. "And my mother is going to answer for every single lie she told."
