Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of Dr. Alvarez

The small, sterile conference room at the Texas Medical Board headquarters in Austin felt like a tomb. Daniel Alvarez sat at the long oak table, his hair unwashed, his shirt wrinkled, and dark circles ringing his sunken eyes. Across from him sat five members of the disciplinary committee, their faces carved out of cold, unyielding granite.

Sitting at the far end of the table, looking radiant and entirely restored, was Eleanor, accompanied by Arthur Vance.

"Dr. Alvarez," the board president, Dr. Sarah Jenkins, said, her voice sharp and clinical. "We have reviewed the security footage provided by the compliance team at St. Jude’s Hospital, as well as the toxicology reports from the evening of October fourteenth. Do you have any statement you wish to make before this committee votes on the immediate and permanent revocation of your license to practice medicine in the state of Texas?"

Daniel looked at the television screen on the wall, which was currently paused on a high-definition frame of him stumbling into the pharmaceutical storage room, his hands shaking as he self-administered a high dose of liquid fentanyl before walking into an operating theater.

He didn't look at the board. He looked straight at Eleanor. His eyes were bloodshot, filled with a desperate, pathetic hatred. "You did this," he whispered, his teeth clenched. "You ruined my life. Everything I worked for... twenty years of medical school, residencies, fourteen-hour shifts... you threw it all in the garbage because of your pride."

"You threw it away the moment you put a patient's life at risk to satisfy your own addiction, Daniel," Eleanor said, her voice calm and steady, echoing with a profound authority that left no room for debate. "My family built St. Jude’s pediatric wing to heal children, not to provide a playground for a man who treats human hearts like trophies."

"I never lost a patient!" Daniel shouted, banging his fist on the table. "I am the best surgeon this city has ever seen! You’re nothing but a trust-fund parasite who sits in her mansion and signs checks with her grandfather's money!"

"That is enough, Dr. Alvarez," Dr. Jenkins interrupted, her gavel slamming down with a sharp, definitive crack. "Your arrogance is as appalling as your misconduct. This committee votes unanimously to revoke your medical license, effective immediately. Furthermore, we are forwarding these files to the State Attorney General for criminal prosecution regarding reckless endangerment and illegal acquisition of controlled substances."

Daniel fell back into his chair, the finality of the words crushing the last remnants of his spirit. He was no longer Dr. Dario Alvarez. He was no longer the brilliant, respected chief of surgery. He was a disgraced addict facing a prison cell, entirely stripped of the power, prestige, and money that had defined his existence.

As the board members rose and began packing their files, Eleanor stood up, smoothing the front of her tailored grey suit. She walked slowly down the length of the table until she stood directly over him.

"The divorce papers were filed this morning, Daniel," she said softly, tossing a thick document onto the table in front of him. "The prenuptial agreement was validated by the judge. You are leaving this marriage with exactly what you brought into it: zero dollars, zero assets, and a name that means absolutely nothing."

Daniel didn't look up. A single tear of pure bitterness rolled down his cheek, dripping onto the legal documents. "I hate you," he choked out.

May you like

"I know," Eleanor whispered, leaning down closer to his ear. "But the difference between you and me, Daniel, is that tomorrow, I will forget you ever existed. While you will spend every single night for the rest of your life remembering exactly who I am."

She turned and walked out of the room into the bright Texas sunshine, leaving the ghost of her past behind her forever.
