Chapter 2 - The House of Glass and MirrorsThe digital clock on the sleek marble nightstand read 5:45 PM. Two hours had passed since Emily had dragged herself through the front door. The apartment was dead silent, save for the faint hum of the air purifier in the nursery.

Suddenly, the silence was violently shattered.

Emily’s phone, resting on the kitchen island, began to buzz, vibrate, and ring incessantly. It wasn’t just a call; it was an onslaught.

She walked out of the bedroom, her body still aching, and picked up the screen. The display was flashing like a strobe light with missed calls and panic-fueled notifications.

Missed Call: Daniel (14) Missed Call: Martha (Mother-in-law) (8) Missed Call: Jessica (Sister-in-law) (5) Text Message (Daniel): EMILY PICK UP THE DAMN PHONE RIGHT NOW WHERE ARE YOU?! Text Message (Martha): Answer this instant! This is a disaster!

Frowning, a cold knot tightening in her chest, Emily pressed answer just as another call began vibrating through her palm.

“Emily!” Daniel’s voice screamed through the receiver. But the haughty, impatient tone from earlier was entirely gone. In its place was sheer, unadulterated panic, his breath coming in ragged, hyperventilating gasps. “Where the hell are you?! Why aren’t you answering? Something terrible just happened! Everything is falling apart!”

Before Emily could even form a single syllable of a response, the phone was violently snatched away on the other end. Martha’s shrill, hysterical voice pierced through the speaker, screeching with a frantic desperation that made Emily pull the phone away from her ear.

“Emily! Listen to me, you worthless ungrateful girl!” Martha shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. “Tell me the truth right now—who the hell are you really?! What kind of sick game are you playing behind Daniel’s back?!”

Emily blinked, her mind momentarily blanking. “What are you talking about, Martha? I just got home from the hospital. You left me there.”

“Don’t play dumb with us!” Jessica cut in, sobbing loudly in the background, the sound of shattering glass echoing through the line. “The accounts are frozen! The police—wait, no, the federal agents are at the corporate office! Daniel’s cards are all declining! They said the company’s primary asset holder pulled every single cent out of the accounts thirty minutes ago! Who are you?! Who authorized that?!”

Emily stood completely still in the middle of the kitchen. Her heart skipped a beat, then settled into a slow, rhythmic, undeniable thrum.

At that exact second, the television in the living room—left on a financial news channel—flashed with a violent red banner cutting across the screen:

BREAKING NEWS: TECH UNICORN ‘APEX SOLUTIONS’ DECLARES SUDDEN BANKRUPTCY AFTER ALL MAJOR VENTURE CAPITAL FUNDING AND ASSETS ARE INSTANTLY WITHDRAWN BY PRIMARY STAKEHOLDER.

Emily looked down at her phone, listened to the frantic, screaming voices of the people who had treated her like garbage less than three hours ago, and then looked toward the hallway leading to the nursery, where her daughter slept safely in her crib.

For the first time all day, Emily didn't feel broken. She didn't feel weak. She felt completely, perfectly calm.

A slow, quiet smile spread across her lips.

“You wanted to know who I am, Martha?” Emily said into the phone, her voice dropping into a chilling, calm register that instantly silenced the screaming on the other end. “I’m the person who built that company from the ground up. And today... I decided to take my house back.”
