Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the Basement

Julian Vance adjusted his silk tie, attempting to project the unshakeable confidence of a man whose family owned three real estate firms in downtown Seattle.

"Mr. Calloway, I respect your business reputation," Julian began, taking a step toward the desk with an air of practiced authority. "But this is a private family matter. Brielle is my ex-partner. That child is my blood daughter, Elodie Vance. Her mother has demonstrated clear child endangerment by hiding her in a commercial restaurant room. We are here to take physical custody of my daughter tonight."

"Is that so?" Everett asked softly.

He didn't hand the baby over. Instead, Everett adjusted his arm, carefully supporting Elodie’s head with his hand. He glanced down at the small pink canvas bag resting on the corner of his desk—the one Brielle had packed that morning.

"Mr. Vance," Everett said, leaning back slightly. "If this child is your daughter, perhaps you can tell me her full middle name?"

Julian blinked, caught completely off guard. "Her... her middle name? It’s... well, we hadn't finalized the paperwork—"

"It’s Rose," Brielle interjected loudly, her voice trembling with righteous fury. "Elodie Rose Dawson. And her father’s name isn't on the birth certificate because he fled to Cabo the week I went into labor!"

Eleanor Vance sneered, taking an aggressive step toward Brielle. "Because you refused our generous financial settlement, girl! You wanted to play the martyr, dragging a Vance child through poverty, living in a cramped studio apartment while working late-night shifts!" Eleanor turned back to Everett, smoothing her fur collar. "Mr. Calloway, as a gentleman of standing, surely you see that my son can provide a nanny, a estate, and a trust fund. Brielle has eighteen dollars in her bank account."

Brielle gasped softly, her face draining of color. "How... how do you know how much money I have?"

A heavy silence fell over the room.

Everett’s eyes narrowed sharply. He looked from Eleanor Vance to Rochelle Pierce, whose jaw had suddenly tightened in nervous tension.

"That is a very interesting question," Everett said softly. "How does a woman who claims to have had no contact with Miss Dawson for eight months know the exact balance of her private checking account?"

Rochelle shifted her weight awkwardly from foot to foot. "She... she probably mentioned it to a coworker, sir—"

"I told no one," Brielle whispered, staring at Rochelle in horror as the terrifying pieces began to fall into place. "I only checked my banking app on the breakroom Wi-Fi at noon today..."

"On the restaurant’s private network," Everett finished the sentence for her. His voice dropped an octave, carrying a terrifying, quiet weight. "The network that Rochelle Pierce manages through the floor terminal."

Rochelle turned pale. "Mr. Calloway! That’s an absurd accusation! I was simply enforcing house safety!"

"Rochelle," Everett said, tapping a black button on his desk phone console. "Connect me to Security."

A speaker crackled to life instantly. "Security Main Desk, Captain Miller speaking."

"Miller," Everett spoke into the receiver without taking his eyes off Rochelle. "Pull up the hallway camera footage outside Linen Storage Room B for 4:45 p.m. today. Tell me who unlocked the latch."

A brief ten seconds of key-clicking echoed through the speaker.

"Got it right here, Mr. Calloway," Captain Miller’s voice rang out clear and crisp across the office. "At 4:42 p.m., Floor Manager Rochelle Pierce used her master keycard to unlatch the storage door. She left it open, walked to the alley exit, and tapped her phone. Two minutes later, a silver Mercedes SUV pulled into the loading dock—registered to Vance Logistics."

Brielle gasped, clutching her hands to her mouth.

Julian’s face flushed a deep, embarrassed red. Eleanor let out a sharp, indignant scoff, while Rochelle looked as if she were about to faint onto the Persian rug.

They hadn't just tried to catch Brielle breaking a rule.

They had orchestrated the entire scenario.

Rochelle had seen Brielle bring the baby in, left the door unlatched to expose the child to the cold, tipped off Julian and Eleanor, and arranged for them to arrive at the exact moment to stage a sudden "child endangerment" scene in front of the owner.

"You monster," Brielle whispered to Rochelle, tears spilling down her cheeks. "You knew I had nowhere else to go today! You knew I was desperate!"

Everett slowly stood up from his chair.

Standing at six-foot-two, holding the tiny sleeping baby effortlessly against his broad chest, his presence dominated the entire room. He looked down at Rochelle with absolute, uncompromising disgust.

"Rochelle Pierce," Everett said, his voice ringing like a bronze bell. "You are terminated. Not just from Harbor & Ash, but from Calloway Hospitality Group. Your access card is revoked. Security will escort you off the premises immediately and oversee the search of your personal belongings."

"Mr. Calloway, please!" Rochelle cried out, her arrogance instantly dissolving into desperate terror. "I was promised a management promotion at the Vance Hotel Group! They told me she was an unfit mother—"

"Captain Miller," Everett spoke calmly into the intercom. "Send four officers downstairs. Escort Miss Pierce, Mr. Vance, and Mrs. Vance off my property. If any of them set foot on a Calloway property again, file immediate charges for criminal trespass and corporate espionage."

"You can't do this!" Julian shouted, stepping forward aggressively. "That is my daughter in your arms!"

Everett took one smooth step forward, putting his broad shoulder between Julian and the baby. His grey eyes burned with a fierce, dangerous intensity that made Julian instinctively freeze in his tracks.

"If you take one more step toward this mother and her child, Mr. Vance," Everett said in a low, deadly purr, "I will personally fund Miss Dawson’s legal defense for the next twenty years. I will buy every debt your family firm holds in this city and call them due by midnight. Test me."

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry. He looked at Everett’s icy resolve, then at his mother, whose confidence had completely evaporated.

Four heavy security guards stepped into the doorway behind them, their hands resting firmly on their belts.

"This way, folks," Captain Miller said firmly.

Eleanor Vance grabbed her son’s arm, pulling him back with trembling hands. "This isn't over, Brielle!" Eleanor hissed over her shoulder as they were marched out the door. "You hear me? A restaurant worker cannot defeat the Vance family!"

The heavy oak door clicked shut, leaving the office in absolute silence once again.
