Chapter 5 - The War for the Twins

The breach at the estate was the final catalyst that unlocked Ethan Martin’s full, terrifying wrath.
By midnight, the estate was secured by three dozen heavily armed Martin Syndicate operators. Frank had rounded up the surviving mercenaries who had breached the perimeter—including Detective Miller—and dragged them into the basement for questioning.
By 2:00 AM, Ethan knew everything.
Richard Vance had used his remaining off-shore funds to hire an elite team of rogue contractors, bribing one of the estate’s secondary gate guards to disable the electronic security grid. Vance was currently hiding out at a private airfield in Long Island, a chartered corporate jet waiting on the tarmac to fly him to a non-extradition country the moment his men brought him the twins.
Ethan walked out of his private command center on the ground floor, his expression made of cold, unyielding granite. He wore a tactical vest over a black shirt, two spare magazines clipped to his belt.
Anna met him in the hallway, her face pale but determined.
"You're going after him," she stated, it wasn't a question.
"He tried to take my family, Anna," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "He signed his own death warrant the moment his men crossed my fence."
"Take me with you," Anna demanded.
Ethan paused, looking at her in surprise. "No. It's too dangerous."
"Richard thinks I am a weak, helpless girl he can bully into submission," Anna said, her brown eyes flashing with a fierce, brilliant light that made Ethan’s heart swell. "I spent two years running from that man. I want to look him in the eye when he loses everything. I am not hiding in a closet anymore, Ethan."
Ethan stared at her for a long, quiet moment. Slowly, a proud, lethal smile curved his lips.
He reached out, taking her face in his hands, pressing a deep, passionate kiss to her lips. "God, you are extraordinary," he whispered against her mouth. "Alright. You stay in the armored SUV with Frank until the perimeter is clear. Understand?"
"Understood."
An hour later, four black armored vehicles tore through the torrential rain toward the private airfield in Long Island.
The hangar was lit by harsh halogen floodlights. A sleek white Gulfstream jet sat in the center, its engines whining as they warmed up for takeoff.
Through the rain-streaked window of the lead SUV, Anna watched as Ethan’s tactical team moved with terrifying precision. They swarmed the hangar like ghosts, neutralizing Vance's outer guards in less than ninety seconds without firing a single unsuppressed shot.
When the signal was given, Frank opened the SUV door for Anna. "It's clear, ma'am. Boss is inside."
Anna stepped out into the pouring rain, pulling her dark coat tightly around herself as she walked into the brightly lit hangar.
Inside, Richard Vance was on his knees on the concrete floor.
His expensive Italian suit was soaked with rainwater, his silver hair disheveled, his hands zip-tied securely behind his back. Ethan stood over him like an ancient judge, his arms crossed, watching the disgraced politician squirm.
When Richard saw Anna walk through the hangar doors, his eyes widened in rage and shock.
"Anna!" Richard yelled, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "You stupid, crazy bitch! Do you have any idea what you've done? You brought a mob boss into our lives! You're ruining everything!"
Anna walked up to him, stopping three feet away. She didn't flinch. She didn't quiver. She looked down at the man who had terrified her for years, and realized he looked pitifully small.
"I didn't ruin your life, Richard," Anna said, her voice clear, strong, and unwavering above the roar of the jet engines outside. "You ruined it yourself when you decided money was worth more than your own children."
"They're MY children!" Richard screamed, spitting blood onto the concrete. "I have rights!"
"You lost your rights when you sent armed men to steal them from a closet," Ethan’s voice cut in, cold enough to freeze the blood in Vance's veins.
Ethan stepped forward, resting a heavy hand on Anna’s shoulder. He pulled a thick folder of documents from his jacket and tossed them onto the wet concrete in front of Vance.
"Those are voluntary parental relinquishment forms," Ethan informed him flatly. "And a full, irrevocable transfer of guardianship rights to Anna Silva."
Richard laughed maniacally. "I'll never sign that! You can't force me! The courts—"
"The courts aren't coming to save you, Richard," Ethan interrupted smoothly. "Outside this hangar, there are six federal agents waiting to arrest you for corporate espionage, attempted kidnapping, and treasonous corruption. If you sign those papers, you will go to a federal prison for twenty years, where you will live out your miserable life."
Ethan leaned down, his eyes narrowing into deadly slits. "If you don't sign them... my men will load you onto that jet. But it won't fly to South America. It will drop you three hundred miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. And no one will ever find your body."
Richard stared into Ethan’s eyes, searching for a bluff, a hint of hesitation.
He found none.
Only the terrifying, absolute emptiness of a man who owned the night.
Richard’s posture collapsed. The arrogance drained out of him completely, leaving a broken, sobbing coward kneeling in the dirt.
"Give me the pen," Richard whimpered, his voice cracking.
Frank stepped forward, cutting the zip-ties on Richard’s hands just enough for him to grip a pen. With trembling fingers, Richard signed his name on every page, surrendering every legal right he possessed over Sophia and Samuel.
When he finished, Ethan picked up the signed documents, checked every signature, then handed them gently to Anna.

"They're yours, Anna," Ethan whispered, looking at her with boundless devotion. "They're completely, legally, permanently yours. No one can ever take them from you again."
Anna clutched the papers to her chest, tears of joy streaming down her face as two federal agents stepped into the hangar, pulling Richard to his feet and dragging him away in handcuffs to face his final reckoning.
