Chapter 4 - The Legal Warzone

The main lobby of Grand Crest Bank looked like a battlefield wrapped in glass and gold leaf.
Three city police officers stood near the frosted glass doors, looking uncomfortable, while a team of four corporate lawyers in pristine dark suits flanked Charles Hail. Charles was a tall, sharply angular man in his late fifties, his hair silver at the temples, his presence radiating an aggressive, aristocratic confidence. Beside him stood Victoria Hail, her face filled with an ugly, vindictive triumph.
When the private elevator doors chimed open, Evan stepped out, flanked by Mr. Vance and two private security guards.
"Ah, the freight coordinator arrives," Charles Hail said, stepping forward, his voice echoing across the marble lobby. He raised a piece of paper. "Mr. Carter, I have an emergency order from the State Superior Court. All assets tied to the Grandcrest Sovereign Trust are hereby frozen pending a full forensic investigation into the legitimacy of your marriage contract and the mental capacity of Sarah Grandcrest at the time of the signing."
Victoria stepped forward, her eyes locked on Evan. "Did you really think you could kick me out of my own bank and walk away with our family's money? You're a thief, Evan. A common scammer who took advantage of a sick woman."
Several high-net-worth clients who had been trapped in the lobby during the lockdown watched the confrontation with bated breath.
Evan didn't flinch. He walked slowly toward Charles, stopping just three feet away. The contrast between the two men was starkâCharles in a three-thousand-dollar custom suit, and Evan in his simple sweater, his hands calloused from years of real labor.
"I didn't take advantage of anyone, Mr. Hail," Evan said quietly. "Sarah ran away from you because you're a thief. And unlike you, I have the proof."
Charles laughed, a loud, booming sound that lacked any genuine mirth. "Proof? My dear boy, you are out of your depth. My lawyers have drafted an ironclad case. This court order allows us to take immediate possession of all physical tokens, keys, and documents related to the founder's estate. Officers, please secure the flash drives and files Mr. Carter is carrying."
One of the police officers took a hesitant step forward. "Sir, we need you to hand over the assets mentioned in the warrant."
Mr. Vance stepped into the light, raising a hand. "Officer, I am Alasdair Vance, Senior Counsel for the Grandcrest Estate. I suggest you read the specific addendum of that warrant very carefully before you touch my client."
Charles's lead lawyer frowned, stepping up. "Vance, the order is signed by Judge Harrison. It's absolute."
"Judge Harrisonâs order covers unverified legacy assets," Vance said, pulling a leather-bound tablet from his briefcase and activating a live video feed. "However, ten minutes ago, we filed a direct emergency counter-suit with the Federal District Court. And more importantly, we uploaded a specific file to the Securities and Exchange Commission."
Charles's smile faltered. "What file?"
Evan took the flash drive from his pocket, holding it up so the lobby cameras could record it. "This is the complete history of 'Maritime Development Group,' Charles. It contains the transaction records of the four hundred and twelve million dollars you stole from the employee pension fund to buy those luxury resorts in the Cayman Islands."
The color drained from Charles Hailâs face so fast it looked like he had been struck. He took a half-step back, his eyes darting to his lead lawyer, who had suddenly frozen, his eyes glued to his own buzzing smartphone.
"Charles..." the lawyer whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at the screen of his device. "The SEC just issued a trading halt on Grand Crest stock. The Department of Justice has signed an emergency arrest warrant for corporate embezzlement. The FBI... they're outside right now."
Right on cue, the heavy glass doors of the bank slid open again. This time, it wasn't city police. Six federal agents in dark windbreakers with "FBI" printed in bold yellow letters across the back walked into the lobby, led by a sharp-faced woman with a leather badge holder clipped to her belt.
"Charles Hail?" the lead agent asked, her voice cutting through the stunned silence of the room.
Charles looked around wildly, his aristocratic composure shattering entirely. He looked at Victoria, who was staring at him in absolute horror, realizing her entire universe was collapsing in a matter of seconds.
"This is a mistake!" Charles shouted, his voice cracking as an agent stepped behind him and pulled his hands into a pair of steel handcuffs. "This man is a fraud! Heâs trying to ruin this institution!"
"Mr. Hail, you have the right to remain silent," the agent said calmly, leading him toward the exit.
As Charles was marched past Evan, he stopped, his face twisted in a mask of pure hatred. "You think you won? You think you can run this place? Without me, this bank will collapse by Monday morning! The market will panic! You'll be the king of a graveyard!"
May you like
Evan looked at the man who had threatened his daughter, the man who had driven his wife into hiding.
"The bank won't collapse, Charles," Evan said, his voice ringing out clearly across the marble lobby. "Because starting today, we're returning the money you stole to the people who earned it. Take him away."
