Chapter 6 - A New Dawn
Six months later.
The morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my new downtown apartment. It was a space entirely my own—no red accents demanded by Eric, no presence of Diane, just clean lines, warm wood, and the sound of Lily giggling from her play mat on the rug.
The legal battle had been fierce, but when a forensic accountant provides the prosecution with a flawlessly organized digital binder of evidence, the defense doesn't stand a chance. Eric had pleaded guilty to wire fraud and grand larceny to avoid a twenty-year sentence; he was currently serving eight years in a federal penitentiary.
Diane, despite her tears and claims of being an unwitting accomplice, was convicted of conspiracy to commit money laundering and perjury. The court seized her house to pay off Eric’s corporate restitution, leaving her exactly where she had lied about being on the day of my baby shower: completely broke and relying on state-appointed housing.
The court had also awarded me full legal and physical custody of Lily, with zero visitation rights for Eric due to the reckless endangerment charges stemming from the night of the baby shower pool incident. My $23,000 delivery fund had been fully recovered from the frozen assets, along with an additional $150,000 settlement from Eric’s liquidated personal assets to ensure Lily’s future education and medical care were permanently secured.
My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was an email from the senior partner at my firm. I had been promoted to Director of Forensic Analytics, complete with a salary increase that made Eric's old corporate income look like pocket change.

I walked over to the window, holding a warm cup of coffee, looking out over the city skyline. Lily crawled over to my feet, pulling herself up against my leg, her big bright eyes looking up at me with absolute trust.
I set my coffee down and lifted her into my arms, pressing my face into her soft curls. We had survived the water. We had survived the cold. And now, under the bright, clear sun, we were finally on solid ground.
