Chapter 5 - The ReckoningA Kingdom PurgedThe ballroom exploded into frantic screams as high-society guests scrambled for the exits.

Anton and six Hargrove security guards swarmed the VIP area, instantly disarming Dominic's bodyguards and pinning them to the floor with weapons drawn.

Adrian’s grip on Dominic’s throat was terrifying. His knuckles were white, his face turned to a mask of absolute, demonic fury. He lifted Dominic two inches off the ground, the older man’s legs kicking frantically as he gasped for air.

"You tried to poison me in public," Adrian growled, his voice a low, terrifying vibration that shook the air. "And you tried to use my mother's charity gala to do it."

"Adrian... please..." Dominic choked out, his eyes bulging.

"Adrian, stop!" I called out, stepping up beside him, laying my hand gently over his flexing forearm. "If you kill him here, in front of two hundred witnesses, the federal prosecutors will have everything they need to take you down. Don't give him that victory!"

Adrian's gray eyes snapped toward me. The wild, murderous rage in his gaze met my calm, unyielding focus.

Slowly, deliberately, Adrian took a deep breath.

He slammed Dominic down onto his knees, letting the groaning man collapse into a pathetic pile on the floor.

"Anton," Adrian barked without looking back. "Call the District Attorney. Tell him we have Mr. Moretti on video attempted murder, corporate espionage, and illegal chemical possession. Hand him over on a silver platter."

"Yes, Boss!" Anton grinned, hauling Dominic up by his collar and dragging him out toward the back doors.

The police sirens were already wailing outside the hotel windows.

Within two hours, the gala was cleared, the forensic teams had confirmed the lethal presence of a rare nerve toxin in the champagne, and Dominic Moretti’s entire organization was being dismantled in real-time by federal agents using the evidence Adrian provided.

At 2:00 AM, the top floor of Hargrove Tower was quiet.

I stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass, looking out over the city lights, holding a warm cup of tea. I was still wearing my velvet gown, though I had taken off my heels, my bare feet sinking into the plush rug.

Soft footsteps sounded behind me.

Adrian walked over, stopping right beside me. He had stripped off his tuxedo jacket and vest, his white shirt open at the neck.

"My mother is safely home," Adrian said softly. "The District Attorney just confirmed that Dominic Moretti will spend the rest of his life in a federal supermax facility."

I took a slow sip of tea, watching the rain streak down the glass. "It never really stops, does it? The threat. The danger."

Adrian was quiet for a moment. He reached out, his long fingers wrapping gently around my waist, pulling me back against his broad chest.

"I have spent fifteen years building a fortress around my life, Nora," Adrian whispered, his lips resting against my hair. "I believed that if I was cold enough, smart enough, and ruthless enough, no one could ever touch me."

He turned me around in his arms so I was forced to look up into his dark, emotive eyes.

"And then you walked into my world," he continued, his voice trembling slightly. "You saved my mother. You saved my men. And tonight... you saved my life. You saw the poison when no one else did."

"I saw it because I was watching you, Adrian," I whispered honestly, my hands resting over his heart, feeling its steady, heavy beat. "I'm always watching you."

Adrian reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small, black velvet box. He popped it open with his thumb.

Inside rested an extraordinary ring—a flawless, emerald-cut grey diamond set in a band of paved platinum, glowing softly under the city lights.

"This company, this city, this life... it means nothing to me without you, Nora," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deep, desperate sincerity I had never heard from him before. "You are my anchor. My conscience. My home."

He looked down into my eyes, his grey gaze burning with pure, undivided love.

"Nora Callahan... will you marry me?"

I looked at the glittering ring, then up into the eyes of the man who controlled the city—a man who was entirely, helplessly consumed by his love for me.

May you like

A brilliant, tearful smile broke across my face.

"Yes, Adrian," I whispered. "Yes."
